I'm off to Dublin for 3 days and 2 nights
Is it really as expensive as they say?
How much spends would you take ?
I was thinking around 550 euro for two of us
Is this likely to be enough ?

It’s enough so long as you don’t buy too much and don’t drink (too much). Keep an eye on the prices before you go in to a restaurant etc.
It is enough, if you cut your cloth accordingly. Enjoy!

bringitbacktome · 11/08/2023 13:47

Tbh we were thinking of spoons for breakfast for the two mornings as it's cheap and cheerful
Just grab a sandwich for lunch then maybe 1 night find a Indian restaurant and the other just a pub with the standard bangers and mash etc
We want to have 1 drink in Temple bar too

Not sure there are Spoons or similar; maybe Mc Donald’s though for breakfast. By the way, pricier but very good in terms of fast food/diner- there’s a chain called Eddie Rockets.

Wheresthebloomingsummersunshine · 11/08/2023 13:54

We found it more expensive than some London prices for some items

VaddaABeetch · 11/08/2023 13:56

Dublin can be expensive & there’s great value too. Kilkenny design do a fab breakfast with homemade brown bread & tea/coffee for €7 for example. Most restaurants do an early bird set menu.

stay away from Temple Bar, it’s an expensive Kip.

VaddaABeetch · 11/08/2023 14:14

Most museums & galleries are free too. What are you interested in?

Nara2k · 11/08/2023 14:19

Spoons is here but not too common

DNLove · 11/08/2023 14:26

Are you staying in city centre? Depends on what you want to do and what level of dining you are after.
Have your 1 drink in temple bar and then get out of there. It's over priced as its a tourist trap. Head to smithfield for a drink or anywhere not in temple bar. A walk around trinity and a trip to Guinness Storehouse and maybe the dart out to Howth or Malahide to see coast and have take away chips on the seafront.

I’d recommend breakfast in Bewleys on Grafton Street- gorgeous venue, really atmospheric and great breakfast and coffee . Not cheap though- about €16 but it’s a proper experience

Sgtmajormummy · 11/08/2023 14:43

I’m going to Dublin for 3 days in late September (not been back for at least 10 years) and two places I wanted to eat were the Kylemore Café in O’Connell street (RIP since 2018) and Beshoff’s fish and chips which are now in Dame Street. Any suggestions to fill the Bewley’s-shaped hole in my life?

Ill be visiting the old Jacobs Biscuit factory site which has been redeveloped, the new Trinity Hall, the Emigration museum and the Writers’ museum. Maybe the new University in the Barracks (forgotten the name).
But that’s as someone who remembers Dublin in the 80s.

Sgtmajormummy · 11/08/2023 14:45

So Bewleys on Grafton Street is back. Last time I looked on Google Maps it was boarded up!

buzzlightyearsgloves · 11/08/2023 14:47

We went for 3 nights 4 days and did stay in temple bar. We spent £1000 euros between the two of us and didn't have a 'nice' meal out or anything for that. That said, we did drink a lot.

Marblessolveeverything · 11/08/2023 14:51

Dublin is more expensive than London if that gives you a steer! Our family go to London a fair bit and stock!

Sgtmajormummy · 11/08/2023 14:51

I booked accomodation as soon as I booked my flight in June. Not much choice in the city centre under €150 a night for a single😡unless you’re willing to stay in a hostel.

franke · 11/08/2023 14:53

I've just given up on a plan to go to Dublin for a couple of nights with ds because I just couldn't justify the cost. Accommodation anywhere within striking distance of the centre seems to be eye-wateringly expensive.

I'll keep this thread bookmarked for the future though Smile

Crikeyalmighty · 11/08/2023 14:59

I think that's plenty unless you are huge drinkers or want to eat Michelin- we spent 450 euros in 3 days and one very lovely meal in Dalkey was 95 euros and we ate every meal out

LookItsMeAgain · 11/08/2023 15:26

We do have Wetherspoons though they may not be saying "Wetherspoons" over the door. Do your homework on which one is closest to wherever you're staying if you are set on having breakfast there.

There are loads of other places that do lovely breakfasts - Bewleys on Grafton Street is one that jumps to mind.

I would stay away from drinking in Temple Bar. There are loads of bars around Grafton Street and around the Quays that will be cheaper than Temple Bar. In Ireland we knickname Eddie Rockets as 'Empty Pockets' as it's quite expensive for food.
If you're looking for somewhere nice to eat around St Stephen's Green, have a look at www.opentable.ie to be able to book a table somewhere nice. Captain Americas is good for food as is Lemon & Duke.

When are you thinking of coming for your visit?

bringitbacktome · 11/08/2023 15:28

@franke we have booked the premier inn which is temple bar and right in the middle of everything
We have paid 200 euro for 2 nights next week

bringitbacktome · 11/08/2023 15:29

@LookItsMeAgain we are booked to come next week
Really excited

When you arrive, I'd recommend that you get yourself a Leap Visitor card - https://about.leapcard.ie/leap-visitor-card

Even getting from one side of the city to another, it will allow you travel by bus or Luas (tram) if your feet get tired from walking! A three day pass (which will cover you easily) is €16 per adult, it's €8 per day otherwise. You could hop on the Luas to go to the National Museum up in Collins Barracks or get to Smithfield and on to the Guinness Brewery. There is a distillery in the city centre if that takes your fancy and you could get a Luas to the 3 Arena and there are loads of restaurants there now. If you wanted to, this would also allow you get a bus to the Zoo in the Phoenix Park and have a wander in the largest enclosed city centre park in Europe. There are so many things that you could do during your visit.

If you're in to comedy - you could see if there is anything on in the Laughter Lounge comedy club - it'll be within walking distance of where you're staying https://laughterlounge.com/

This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Leap Visitor Card - Leap Card

The Leap Visitor Card is a public transport ticket for tourists and visitors to Dublin. Buy it in Dublin airport or online. Valid on Dublin Bus, trams and trains.

4 of us went out last night for dinner and spent 175e on food and
180e on alcohol
40e on taxis
Wasn't a late night just dinner and drinks

notasgreenasiamcabbagelooking · 11/08/2023 16:05

There are some decent places to eat on Capel Street which aren't too expensive. You could also have a pint in Slattery's, which is an old Victorian pub and cheaper than temple bar.

WhatCameFirstTheChickenOrTheDickhead · 11/08/2023 16:18

We are doing a flying visit next month (36 hours) and have budgeted £250 for 2 x brunch/lunch, 1 x evening meal and all drinks based on menus I have looked at online. Then £50 for the Guinness Storehouse and everything else we want to do is free.
