Moviprep

Hi all,

Not sure if this should be in health, but hopefully it will get good traffic in chat!

I am due to have a colonoscopy in the morning.

Have to drink 2 litres of moviprep , split into 2 doses 5-6pm and 8-9pm, I'm on my second dose still.

Really struggling, having difficulty Not vomiting.

What I am passing is now clear, so is it okay to stop once that is clear?

I don't think I can take much more of it 🤢🤢

Thank you in advance

My guess is it’s probably ok. But I’m just a lay person who has had a couple of colonoscopies. I’m not a nurse or a dr.

WitheringTights000 · 10/08/2023 21:25

@vincettenoir - this stuff is so vile. Honestly can barely get it down, I'm chugging sprite with it and it's still horrendous!

vincettenoir · 10/08/2023 21:26

Yeah I know. It’s nasty stuff. All the best for tomorrow.

It's really horrible and for me personally, the worst part of the whole experience. I opted for conscious sedation so no memory of the 'camera up the bum' stuff.
Are you still able to drink plain water as well as the preparation? That was the only way I could do it: drink the prep then cleanse my mouth with a glass of plain water. I wasn't vomiting either but the prep made me gag.

Good luck with the procedure.

Ireallyshouldchangemyusername · 10/08/2023 21:46

Have you got a straw and are drinking it very cold? That helps a bit.

I down it in 200-250ml glasses through a straw sucking on a lemon before input the straw in my mouth then after I've done it.

Ruins lemons for me for about a year after each scope but it does work

Ireallyshouldchangemyusername · 10/08/2023 21:52

Oops meant to preview. Sorry for typos.

Try and drink it all. I sometimes find I pass something in the morning after being all clear at night . I have peace of mind knowing I have drunk it all.

I did once get a call at 11.30 am though, with a cancellation available for the next day. Despite me having had a huge breakfast and already eaten a huge lunch the prep was all ok... So I'm not sure the fasting is even essential and the drinking most of the prep will work im sure, especially if fasted.

Good luck

Crinkle77 · 10/08/2023 22:24

No, I would drink it all cos you don't want to risk your bowel not being clear and having to do it again another time.

Crinkle77 · 10/08/2023 22:27

The Moviprep I had was orange flavoured? No one else have that? Every one else seems to drink it with lemonade or sprite but for me the taste was fine. It was more the viscosity. I just coped by downing it as quickly as I could.

MaidOfSteel · 10/08/2023 22:31

I couldn't quite manage to finish the second lot of Moviprep. Like you, I was just passing clear water by that point. I told the nurse at the unit all this and she said I wasn't the first & wouldn't be the last, and my colonoscopy went ahead.
Good luck for tomorrow.

WitheringTights000 · 13/08/2023 22:45

Thanks to for the well wishes.

I left one 200ml glass as I couldn't bear to drink the last one, I was wrenching and heaving it was terrible.

My moviprep said 'orange' on the packet but it was clearly lemony flavour 🤢

Had the procedure on Friday, was able to go ahead with it which was good.

Colonoscopy results clear, but they have taken biopsies for celiac disease, microscopic colitis etc.

Endoscopy showed slight inflammation in the duodenum , they biopsied that also, but said it could just be the appearance of it/it's nothing bad etc.

The reason why I had all that done is I have significant iron deficiency anaemia and I do have tummy problems.

I've started iron tablets today but I don't know why I'm so anaemic.

I have always had heavy periods but never been anaemic before! Diet hasn't been good, but again never has been.

Has anyone else had clear colonoscopy etc but very low iron??

OP posts:
CynicalCake · 13/08/2023 22:54

Yep. It was my periods, we think. Repeatedly low iron, repaired with iron infusions. Been happening for five years, hoping it's fixed now

Do your tummy problems involve taking ppi for heartburn? They make it very difficult to absorb enough iron even if you're diet is good because you need to have a low stomach pH to take in the iron, while ppi obv raise stomach acid to reduce the heartburn.

Many people can't tolerate oral iron - I managed to get an iron infusion twice which was amazing, and recently had ablation surgery to reduce heavy periods

Fwiw I realised how heavy and disruptive my periods were once the ablation surgery stopped them. I was like a frog in hot water - I had just accepted the "oh well" attitude of the gynaecologist rather than actually arguing "no this isn't right and you know it".

Alissia · 13/08/2023 23:09

Another who recently had lemon moviprep and a colonoscopy due to IDA indicated on blood tests. (I have no symptoms and am post menopause.) Diverticulitis and a small - 5mm - polyp found. Awaiting biopsy results before I see the GP and discuss iron tablets.

WitheringTights000 · 13/08/2023 23:12

@CynicalCake - thank you for your reply.

My periods are heavy as I do have endometriosis but they told me it was 'dormant'

They have always been heavy though.

I don't take ppi's as I actually don't find they work for when I have reflux etc.

In terms of the iron transfusion, did you get it on the NHS or did you have to pay?

I do feel somewhat queasy today after taking the first iron tablet!

And the abalations? Was that for endo?

OP posts:
WitheringTights000 · 13/08/2023 23:14

@Alissia - was the diverticulitis picked up on the colonoscopy? Mine was clear!

No poly ops either!

What else did they biopsy you for?

OP posts:
Alissia · 13/08/2023 23:34

Yes, the diverticulitis was discovered during the colonoscopy. The GP suspected cancer which was ruled out on the day.

WitheringTights000 · 13/08/2023 23:36

@Alissia - glad to hear cancer was ruled out.

I am getting a biopsy for Celiac but I had sort of assumed I'm too old to be diagnosed with that.

I am 31 this week and I think I've heard a lot of people get diagnosed with that in their early 20's

OP posts:
Alissia · 13/08/2023 23:37

It’s good to note I’m not alone in finding the moviprep tasted fine. Having read so many people’s accounts, I expected it to be like pond water. No. I was just wary of it working too quickly.

Alissia · 13/08/2023 23:39

Thanks, WitheringTights000. Fingers crossed for you.

Happy birthday this week, OP!
An interesting - and relevant to me - point about PPIs, CynicalCake, which I’ll raise with my GP. Many thanks.

Nat6999 · 14/08/2023 01:32

Cider Vinegar is good for heartburn. Anyone who can't tolerate the prescribed iron tablets, I have found Hema Plex iron capsules work really well, I take one every other day, the iron is plant based & doesn't upset my stomach.

ghostbusters · 14/08/2023 02:36

My husband's granny was diagnosed with coeliac disease age 90! She was anaemic, they tested for CD before looking for a cancer. You really can get it at any age! You would have had biopsy during the endoscopy for CD as the damage occurs in the duodenum, physically impossible to biopsy for CD during a colonoscopy).

Hope you get the results soon.

CynicalCake · 14/08/2023 10:24

@WitheringTights000 the ablation was just for heavy periods - I needed my gallbladder out due to them seeing something possibly sinister in a scan (turned out ok) but it was an urgent op and it had to be cancelled as I was too anaemic. That seemed to get them to deal with it a bit more urgently - the first infusion was so I could have the gallbladder op and the second was so I could have the ablation op. It was bloody amazing how much better I felt after and it made me furious that so much of my life has been wasted feeling less than great due to something which could have been fixed. I reckon your heavy periods are having a big effect and you've just got used to it.

(I'm honestly not sure about the advice on cider vinegar btw - vinegar is an acid, heartburn is the effects of stomach acid inflaming and irritating the oesophagus. I don't think throwing more acid down there helps). Heartburn could be caused by a hiatus hernia?

On my colonoscopy / endoscopy they've found diverticulitis, duodenitis, gastritis, oesophagitis and another one I can't recall. I've a hernia too - basically I'm fucked and I need to turn my attention to dealing with it (currently number 283 in the list of shit I need to do).

@Alissia - thanks for the well wishes 😊

@WitheringTights000 I'm having that exact procedure on Monday, the endo/colonoscopy for the exact same reason as you, significant anaemia and digestive issues with no cause. Is the procedure as awful as I'm thinking it's going to be?

WitheringTights000 · 15/08/2023 20:17

@Friarclose - the prep is the worst part. Very unpleasant, I followed each mouthful with a large swig of sprite. But you will get through it

I was sedated for both of the procedures and I can't remember it at all.

Good luck 😊
