Looking at maps. I'll try and do block days where I'm kind of in the same area each day. Going for one week next February (I hate hot weather). I'll get a 4 day pass to do the attractions, the other days I'll just be wandering around. Little Italy, shopping and eating, drinking. I've already posted a few things but if anyone can please tell me if I'm thinking on the right lines location wise I'd really appreciate it!

Day 1 (hotel is Wall Street)
9/11 memorial
Statue of liberty ferry cruise

Day 2
Empire State Building
Museum of sex (intrigued)
Madame Tussauds

Day 3
Air and space museum
Museum of natural history

Day 4
St Patrick's Cathedral tour followed by catacombs by candlelight tour underneath
Artechouse (to the left of the island so I know this is further... it's just last on the list)

Thoughts?! I'm excited... but going alone so very nervous!!

Imo you should do the empire state at midnight. No queues, and the view is spectacluar at night.

HundredMilesAnHour · 10/08/2023 20:49

I'm baffled by the Madame Tussauds choice? (each to their own but...)

No Central Park / the Met / Guggenheim? No Soho/Greenwich Village? No Chelsea market / High Line?? No Brooklyn Bridge / Heights / Williamsburg?

I'll be keeping 2 days free to do other things

I mean MT isn't essential? Just thought why not

I really didn’t like the 9/11 museum, the site outside was ok but not indside

the statin ferry is free to see Statue of Liberty

the high line and the hive were nice along with a market in that area

really liked Ellen stardust dinner

mynameiscalypso · 10/08/2023 20:57

I much prefer the Top of the Rock to the Empire State.

Hellohah · 10/08/2023 20:58

Madame Tussaud's is rubbish in New York.
If you've been to the London one, it'll be a massive disappointment. Took about 20 minutes to go round. They do have a National Geographic museum place near by as well, where you can spend another hour or so.

MumofSpud · 10/08/2023 20:58

Just come back -
Your Day 2 (imo) needs changing - Madame T is (overpriced) rubbish and Museums of Sex are always terrible!

We stumbled across RiseNY - which was a museum of NY history (but interesting that teen DD liked it) ending in a 4D 'flight' thing around NY - you know when you sit and the screen ya in front of you - it was surprisingly emotional - the woman next to me cried!

February will be cold! You will only need to do the short ferry trip - we did a 4 hour one in February- too long!

Because it's awful?? And there are a million better things to do with your time in NYC? (Sorry, it's your choice - I am equally baffled by the queues of tourists outside the MT in London also).

Enjoy your trip! Nothing to worry about going alone - it means you can do whatever want (including going to MT 😂) whenever you want. If you want some company, join one of the small group tours. There are a couple of very good food ones that run in the Village / Little Italy.

If you fancy evening entertainment, The Stand NYC comedy club is downtown (so your day 1) and we got midweek tickets for $10 was hilarious and lovely bar for drinks in x

MumofSpud · 10/08/2023 21:01

Do you like shows?
We saw Chicago and Moulin Rouge - both fantastic- I was always a bit snobby about jukebox musicals but Moulin Rouge is fabulous!!
Ellen's Stardust Diner is great (but I know it can be marmite!) we have been lucky that we have timed it well and never queued to get in!

NewYorkFirstTimer · 10/08/2023 21:01

Right. Fuck MT then!

@NewYorkFirstTimer NYC is great I’ve spent a lot of time there but as a previous user mentioned you’re missing some amazing things and arguably have included some unusual choices. The ones your missing:

  • Guggenheim
  • Broadway shoe
  • MOMA
  • Highline
  • Soho
  • Central Park is absolute must
  • Brooklyn Bridge
  • UN

also Feb is v v cold much colder than UK so you’ll need a proper ski jacket

enjoy !

NewYorkFirstTimer · 10/08/2023 21:03

Definitely want to spend a morning strolling around Central Park

Jxtina86 · 10/08/2023 21:04

The Statue of Liberty ferry cruise is not worth it. Do the free Staten Island one for sure - much better photo opportunities of the Statue itself.

Danikm151 · 10/08/2023 21:05

Skip the Statue of Liberty and go to Ellis Island- you pass liberty on the way 🙂

if you’re feeling brave head to queens and go to https://movingimage.us/

empire state building at night is a must!

how about a broadway show?

tealgate · 10/08/2023 21:05

I would include the Tenement Museum and the Skyline Walk?

www.tenement.org/

LividHot · 10/08/2023 21:05

You have to see a show! Any show! You can buy tickets on the day from near the red steps on Times Square.

MumofSpud · 10/08/2023 21:05

The High Line is much nicer in summer - both as a respite from the heat and with all the flowers out.
I was disappointed by Top of the Rock - yes you can see Empire State from it but it was, when we went, v v overcrowded and quite difficult to get a good view as it was 6 deep around the edge

MidsummerMimi · 10/08/2023 21:05

My family are American and I know NYC well.
Your plan sounds great.
Grand Central Station and the market inside are great.
The High Line is a lovely walk.
If you have any hobbies, interests like literature, dance, yoga or art there are many classes that you can join for one or two sessions.Works well if you are travelling alone.
You will have a fabulous time.

Lordofmyflies · 10/08/2023 21:05

I think you'll struggle on day 3 doing the two huge museums in one day. I'd pick Natural history and team it with a walk through Central Park to the MET? I think they're in a similar area from memory.
Also top of the rock is way better than the Empire State. You actual get to see the Empire State as oppose to stand on it.

Auntpodder · 10/08/2023 21:07

Lower East Side Tenement Museum is fab - a building where they've researched the lives of real people who lived there and there are special kid-orientated tours. Def ditch Madame Tussauds. For a free museum that's lovely, the NY Public Library has a new exhibition space with the real Winnie the Pooh and lots of random stuff.

NewYorkFirstTimer · 10/08/2023 21:08

Right, scrap the SOL cruise and get the Staten Island one. Fab. Erm... where do I get on it from Wall Street.

I am completely clueless at this! Don't even get me started on the subway map

OP posts:
Puravida23 · 10/08/2023 21:09

Sign yourself up for one of the free walking tours . (You pay what you think they are worth) We did a great one in New York which met at Wall Street. Really interesting and will get you orientated
