What would you retrain as if...

  • You have a bit of money to support training.
  • Training has to be do-able part time or during evenings/weekends.
  • Potential for stable-ish expected income after training.
  • An ok work- life balance and bit of autonomy, maybe self employment as a longer term option.

Looking for inspiration please 💫

Personal trainer / gym instructor

DelurkingAJ · 10/08/2023 17:32

I’m an accountant and you could train like that.

wehaveeaches · 10/08/2023 18:03

What about using the money to support yourself while you take a low paying job and work your way up in a corporation or something? You can get good money and there are endless potential pathways. Frequent working from home too.

My wife is retraining to be a psychotherapist, it's a part time Master's course. She'll be self employed once qualified.

EezyOozy · 10/08/2023 18:08

I’m a bookkeeper and the training fits your criteria. See ICB or AAT.

Do I not have to be great at numbers for accounting or bookkeeping and incredibly driven? I lack both 😂

Did she have to have a relevant BA? Mine is pretty random.

@riffraffroff yes, possibly not if numbers actively aren’t your thing!

Apprenticeship in something?

allgrownupnow · 10/08/2023 19:37

No, you don't need a relevant degree to do psychotherapy training, or any degree at all. Most courses you need an introductory course and an interview and application to asses suitability.
It is an expensive training as you need to be in therapy for the duration. Not all counselling courses require this, by they won't lead to accreditation by bacp or UKCP

For the msc it takes 5 or 6 years but you can start earning after about three years.

She was a secondary school teacher, so quite random as well. Though apparently teachers make quite good therapists in their 2nd careers, according to her course leader.

Health & Safety Advisor. Ive seen quite a few older people change careers to h&s. You can get into manufacturing/public service /construction. There is own opportunity to be an independent advisor working with various small construction companies and also provide MH training (and charge extra for it) etc.

If money is the issue, something that pays well like programming, high end data science, finance and accounting roles.
Or else, a trade like gas safe fitter/ hetas fitter, etc. they earn shitloads although I’m not sure how easy it would be to learn that in day release only

PSBorNormal · 11/08/2023 05:18

Pharmacist. Every day I look at the job ads for around here and there seems to be a shortage!

HelloSunshine12 · 11/08/2023 05:29

Probably a physiotherapist or something along those lines. I did consider it as a teen but went a different way.
