Anyone disappointed by their holiday?

Here now and really trying to throw myself into despite being really gutted by the hotel which is absolutely not worth the money we paid. Trying to just enjoy it but all the extras have come as a shock for what we expected and read to be all inclusive.
Turns out all inclusive doesn’t get you a sun bed either!

This is why I always book separate flights, Airbnb a nice apartment and eat out every evening at a nice restaurant. On the first day we go to the supermarket and buy cereal, milk, bread, salad, sandwich fillings, fruit, crisps, cakes, biscuit, tea, coffee, etc and have cereal for breakfast and make a picnic to take with us for lunch. So much cheaper and more enjoyable to go to different restaurants each evening.

We’re similar…my jaw absolutely drops at the prices people pay for disappointing holidays. I know everyone is different and I can’t imagine enjoying even a good AI. We spent £90 a night last year to rent a little pool house in the grounds of a French mansion and we had the most glorious 25m pool entirely to ourselves for the whole week, it was absolute bliss. I can’t imagine spending thousands to be fighting over a pool lounger!

@MaggieD18 I agree about the Illa D'or - such a lovely position though isn't it!! Yours sounds great-

We once rented off VBRO a 3 bed ground floor apartment on a development behind the illaD'or - and across the road- several pools on complex too- that was really nice.

Needspace2023 · 15/08/2023 14:55

Air bnb is problematic though in cities as it has caused a lot of increase in property prices and rent for locals. I'm conscious that it differs outside of cities though.

Another overlooked region of France is Camargue. In my 20s I combined cheap stays near St Marie de la Mer, Avignon and Arles. Was fabulous and I really had very little money then. Appreciate you havebto factor in kids but you can apply the same principles.

Agree AI is a bit shit and overpriced. My husband wanted it as he really wanted to unwind ( long hours, rat race London). Stupid way to live really.

If you're on a budget, you really might have the best time immersing in a country by renting a place, air b n b etc

To be honest my favourite holidays were in Glastonbury staying on a farm as a kid, but this was because my mum a single mum would go with another mum with kids around our age. Search Paddington Farm Trust and you can camp there. Its magical.

@Scousefab ha- I'm glad it wasn't just me too. People say it's being snobby- but it's not. My son enjoyed Butlins more at 1/3 of the price.

There was a Butlins near us in Pwllheli you could get a day pass back in the 80's I'd drive there for the day the children loved it. Now it's Haven Leisure and quite expensive.

threatmatrix · 16/08/2023 10:01

First thing I do is tip the pool boy, loungers are ready for me every morning.

Crikeyalmighty · 16/08/2023 10:28

@justasking111 stayed there several times in my teens- I remember it had the hills as a backdrop.

That sounds lovely - how do you find these places??

That sounds lovely - how do you find these places??

AirBnB mostly - as someone said earlier I'm conscious of the ethics of AirBnB in big cities where it's caniballising homes that people could live in but I try to find places that are a bit more off the beaten track and that aren't regular accomodation (a pool house is never going to be a permanant home for anyone!).

We've never had a disappointing AirBnB - they've all been good at least and some truly amazing. But I try not to blow the budget on accommodation so we've got plenty to spend on experiences, meals etc and we normally stay in 2-3 different places over the course of a holiday so if any one place fails to wow then we haven't got all our eggs in one basket.

I realise that lots of people like the simplicity of the whole AI experience - just being able to pick a package from a catalogue and not having to think at all about what to do, where to go, where to eat etc, for them that's the least stress option. Whereas I think it'd just make me anxious - if you've paid a small fortune and it's not what you expected, then you're a bit stuck! Maybe I'm just a bit of a control freak but I like to research and plan holidays exactly to my own liking!

Crikeyalmighty · 16/08/2023 13:45

@Beetleback I'm with you- I also like picking out and researching cafes and restaurants and enjoy a potter round a foreign supermarket as part of the holiday- I'm not one for lying on a beach at all. guess we are all different!!

Foreign supermarkets are always a holiday highlight for me! I guess other people think we're mad for going on holiday and still having to do a food shop!

Sometimes it doesn't all go to plan - I remember one occasion trudging round a town with increasingly hungry miserable kids unable to find a suitable restaurant that wasn't packed to the rafters and ending up in McDs out of desperation - but it's one day, one meal - tomorrow you might have a picnic of delicious local cheeses in an idyllic location or find a little taverna where they treat you like family.

TheBirdintheCave · 16/08/2023 14:35

@Beetleback Oh you just gave me such a vivid flashback as we did the exact same thing re trudging around trying to find somewhere to eat with our toddler in Ferrara the other year. We were also forced into McDonalds (which my husband hates with a burning passion) as the heavens opened and we were left with no choice 😂 Son then threw his nuggets and only ate the chips.

It was crazy day. 28C and a raging thunderstorm. Though despite the rocky lunch time we ended up spending a quite relaxing couple of hours in a gelato place under a canopy whilst our son napped.

Crikeyalmighty · 16/08/2023 14:43

@Beetleback ha yes- we once had an evening that was similar and I believe had a kebab!

Ginmonkeyagain · 16/08/2023 15:13

Everyone has one of those! Our most recent holiday we arrived in Perpignan on a Saturday - a city that keeps much later eating hours than a lot of France and has an abundance of delcious places to eat from very casual tapas counters to very fancy restaurants - we ended up going to a very average and rather expensive pizza place in a fairly dull part of town.

In our defence it as the Saturday of the riots and the town was a dead as a doornail as all suburban transport was suspended. So we decided to stay close to our hotel and went to the nearest street we came across that looked like it had life.

Thing improved immeasurably over the next few days.

Ginmonkeyagain · 16/08/2023 15:16

Exactly @Beetleback - we got a hotel on Booking.com for our recent French holiday for £60 a night - it as located right in the centre of the city on the banks of a canal. It was perfectly fine (large room, en suite bathroom, friendly owners) for our needs as we were using it as somewhere to sleep and shower in between activities.

MaggieD18 · 15/08/2023 10:30

Marsenses Mar and Spa. Used to stay at the Illa D’or but not really suitable for children. I think the staff here and food are better though

Hi do you have a link for this hotel? The only one I can find is adult only?

Potnoodleforbrains · 19/08/2023 17:09

I feel your pain of disappointment, we are on our second week in Cornwall. First week in Polperro great hotel, lots of room friendly staff. Second week in Bude, tiny tiny room. And staff that seem like they don't want you here. I might go home early. And I love Cornwall. 😳

floribunda18 · 20/08/2023 04:39

soupmaker · 12/08/2023 18:57

I was in Croatia earlier this year, food in restaurants and in the supermarkets was no more expensive than the UK. Wine was a lot cheaper. I got a bottle of very nice gin for €11! The site we were on charged €10 a day for a sun lounger and parasol I think.

Exactly, and I work in London and regularly go out there. So I rarely go anywhere and think "Ooh that's expensive." 😂

Though even Spain was very cheap 30 years ago- things change and it makes sense that prices are more similar across Europe now.

Still doesn't mean you have to be ripped off by a package holiday provider though.

Please share details. I'm dying to go to Sri Lanka with the family and would like to do a resort and then look into travelling more. I'm half Sri Lankan but have never been as have no relatives there as they all emigrated to the US and my dad to the UK aged 19.

Sorry for the delay, back home now

It was lovely, the lovely places are very lovely but there are still a LOT of undeveloped places, very poor areas/half built places which looked to just be abandoned

I wouldn't want to venture out under our own steam, we did a couple of Tui tours and even there the places we went to the people would give you a nice tour, you'd think this is nice then you'd get to the shop and they'd really pressure you to buy something, one in particular was a moon stone mine, same at a gem place. I'd be browsing the cabinets and they'd keep picking out necklaces etc so I could "try them on" and putting them round my neck. I was maybe interested in buying something, however it put me right off as to me jewellery is a very personal choice and I like to take my time, pick out a couple of nice pieces to then look at more closely, they were picking items that weren't to my taste. I get they are poor and desperate to make money but it actually did the opposite and put me right off out of the 2 places I just brought a single moonstone, had I felt less obliged to buy that I'd maybe have picked out a bracelet or necklace at the gem place instead

The minute we left the hotel we were for want of a better word accosted by a tuk tuk driver, when we said we were going to check out the supermarket he walked the whole way with us then waited outside to walk back with us!! Again, I know you need money but it felt creepy, especially the waiting outside

The roads are in fantastic condition Vs pothole UK but they don't have the network we do so the tours tend to take the dual carriageway type roads which takes longer, because there isn't the array of options we have here

The stray dogs look like they are a real problem, lots look very mangey, showing signs of worms, wouldn't want to touch. I'm guessing it goes against their beliefs to "deal" with the issue. There are a LOT of them, getting into the roads and all sorts. Doesn't help I'm not a dog person

As said don't get me wrong the lovely bits were truly lovely, probably the best hotel we have stayed in and the staff were amazing, couldn't do enough for you, the hotel had a beach right behind it, again gorgeous beach and sunsets, lovely deep sand, but again you had the issue of people immediately trying to sell stuff the minute you set foot on the beach. I haven't visited loads of places abroad but probably only Rome was similar. The elephant orphanage was nice to see and the elephant safari

If you're doing a resort with organised tours I'd definitely say is the best option I definitely wouldn't want to do it under my own steam. Be prepared to go in with your eyes wide open as very easy to fall for sales pitches after tours, we did more than once before getting more wise to it

I feel 2 weeks was perfectly sufficient to have a large amount of pool time but also see a bit of everything. It was nice and quiet in our hotel, I think it's their winter so wasnt rammed, it was a big hotel so wouldn't want to be there in busy season, the change in how busy it was was noticeable at the weekend as they must have had a deal for locals to use the facilities. We'd booked whale watching but Tui said the sea was too rough so cancelled it (the emetophobic part of me is very grateful although was looking forward to seeing them)

MadCatLady27 · 23/08/2023 18:30

Came back from ours yesterday... Holiday itself was lovely although neither of us didn't have some sort of lurgey at any one point!

Had to listen to a child's iPad game for the entire 10 hours flight all the way back because they had the volume up really loud, no headphones or them asking her to either play it without the volume or wear headphones. It said the same phrases over and over and over, when it wasn't speaking there was the usual child friendly music and clinking of whatever was being collected. I would have had no problem with it being used as a form of entertainment as imagine it's hard keeping them busy for 10 hours but for the love of God please turn off the sound or put child headphones on!

I noticed there were a lot of children in the restaurant watching you tube videos/ playing games, again with full sound and no headphones. I don't want to spend my meal listening to an annoying as hell you tube show thanks!

@MadCatLady27 thank you so much for sharing your experience ❤

I've heard Sri Lanka's tourist numbers have dropped dramatically due to the economic crisis which is such a shame as the island has it all in terms of natural beauty, weather, wild life , history and culture. People are really struggling there it seems.
I totally agree that venturing out with an organised tour would be the best way to do it. Last year I contacted an agency and they built an itinerary and gave me a quote and it was very reasonable considering it.

I will definitely start researching and looking to book something with a mix of enjoying a resort and then travelling around.

My father was born and raised in Negombo so my heart says look for a base there and then book various excursions from there. He came from a Catholic family and Negombo mainly is Christian- I believe I have distant family there too and so would be great to get in touch.

Thank you so much for the feedback and I'm glad you had a mostly enjoyable holiday.

I do feel we get ripped off in Europe and yet we don"t really need to stay ok a resort as much as in a developing country. Plus Southern Eourope gets so.hot during school summer holidays and far too busy.

We stayed in an amazing 5* hotel in Negombo for our honeymoon! It really was amazing.

Do you think it’s ever worth complaining and attempting a refund if you feel you’ve been miss sold a holiday?

It depends what was wrong. As an ex travel agent some people took the piss and others had a genuine complaint.

Needspace2023 · 27/08/2023 00:17

@Meredusoleil oh that's wonderful to hear! Do let me know which hotel although I'm sure most of those 5* ones are all fabulous xxx
