Fizzy water maker - Soda Stream, Aarke or Drinkmate?

Whenwillglorioussummercome · 10/08/2023 13:43

I've got 20% off at Lakeland and have been meaning to buy a fizzy water thing so want to use it for that. Anyone got views between the various options? I am tempted by the Soda Stream Duo because it comes with so many bottles (four - two plastic and two glass) but the Aarke is quite lovely looking. The Drinkmate is cheap!

Any views on any of them?

We have an Aarke. Had around 4 years and it’s been great. It’s well made, looks good and we have had no issues. It’s all metal as well so no plastic parts to break

I have a soda stream. Works great, really like it and have saved loads as I drink a lot of fizzy water

I have the drinkmate. It has the advantage that you can carbonate more than just water. I adore it. I carbonate tea, juice, and all sorts of combinations.

I like the Aarke, it's on my Amazon wishlist at the moment. It looks more classic to have on your worktop at home, the Sodastream looks like plastic tat.

HoldingPatterns · 13/08/2023 06:51

I’ve had a soda stream for years, love it.

Malariahilaria · 13/08/2023 06:54

I bought a sodastream about 4 years ago now. Use it twice daily. Did originally join the club where they send you replacements but realised it wasn't really making sense financially so now I just buy and swap from a local chain. I create so much less plastic waste now as love fizzy water.

Yep. My DP got one. It sits on the worktop, taking up space and looking horrible. I love him dearly, but if something awful happened to him, the bloody Sodastream would be the very first thing I'd put in the bin.

This is why we went for the Aarke. I use it a lot, and it looks lovely sitting out. No regrets.

Extra info for you- I don't use mine because DDog hates the noise it makes. I have to remember to fizz up while he's out on a walk.

Also, I just don't find it cheap, when unbranded sparkling water is very cheap. It does hit the plastic waste spot though. Must be more organised!

CheersToMe · 13/08/2023 08:10

Had the basic soda stream for ages. Does the job. Can swap out the standard screw top canisters at Argos or Sainsbury's.

It lives in the pantry not on the worktop. The copper Aarke is pretty though...

CheersToMe · 13/08/2023 08:12

I like being able to fizz a small or large bottle as needed, rather than having a cheap 2l plastic bottle from the supermarket which inevitably goes flat before it's finished.

Bunny2021 · 13/08/2023 08:22

We’ve got an Aarke and I love it. I purely went for it on design - I don’t mind having it out on the counter, it looks good. I didn’t want a plastic soda stream on the side as I think they look a bit cheap.

eurochick · 13/08/2023 08:30

I have a soda stream. I've had it for four or five years and have saved so many plastic bottles by having it. I do think the metal ones look a lot better on the kitchen side though so when it breaks I will get one of those.

Crabacus · 13/08/2023 08:33

We have an Aarke and love it. Looks good, well-made and sturdy. would recommend them.
we have a subscription online to get the gas bottles delivered, works really well and definitely cuts down plastic waste.

Whenwillglorioussummercome · 13/08/2023 10:10

Oh, you all came alive at night!

Those with Aarke machines, are the cylinders easy to source?

And for everyone, I don’t want to get too hung up on the bottles provided. But the Duo appealed to me as you get glass ones for the fridge and also plastic ones for taking out. Can we easily decant fizzy water to other bottles without losing the fizz too much if I go for a model with just one bottle? I know I can buy extra for Soda Stream but Aarke too?

We drink a lot of this stuff and I’m desperate to stop the endless pile of plastic bottles in our recycling.

I was in the same position the Aarke is a thing of beauty but the Duo does everything I need.

I have 3 glass bottles and the seal is really good they stay fizzy for weeks (if left).

I am really pleased with it as I drink loads of sparkling water and it was tedious carrying about 12 bottles of water each time I went shopping.

It also means I don’t have to use plastic.

CheersToMe · 13/08/2023 10:50

Doesn't the Aarke use the soda stream canisters?

Whenwillglorioussummercome · 13/08/2023 11:13

I don’t know re the Aarke machine but I’m slightly nervous that Soda Stream is moving to the new Connect bottles which must risk their canisters becoming non-compliant with other machines if they can be used now?

Re Aarke :
canisters are the same as sodastream, I just exchange mine at my local supermarket

yes you can buy as many spare bottles as you like. You can easily fill a couple at a time if you drink lots and wanted to.

Aarke also do a glass bottle version. But the machine is much bigger and more expensive.

eurochick · 13/08/2023 18:50

I grabbed the last two traditional refill canisters in my local Sainsbury's this week. The others were all the Connect type. I do hope the old style won't have an availability problem soon.
