Do your kids play with toys anymore?

I have an 8 and a 10 year old. They have toys that they got for Christmas, but they barely play with them.

They prefer their tech such as the switch or ds, reading (in dd’s case) or going to the park.

I have an 8 and almost 10 year old. Yes, they still play with toys. Lego, Barbies, Our Generation dolls, Sylvanian families, board games, LoL dolls etc. You Tube and PS games too though

Soubriquet · 10/08/2023 10:34

Thing is, they see toys advertised and are like wow! I want that for Christmas. So obviously they get it. They play with it for a few days and then that’s it. They might go back to it after a few months and have bit more play and then again it’s thrown aside

Same. Although they do play sometimes, mainly prefer their tech.

Although at times I ban them from tech if they've not done hw or chores etc, then suddenly their toys have worth.
So I have not got rid altogether but I have got rid of some (donated) and try not to buy any more toys.

Dd nearly 7 less and less so. Didn’t want to bring any on holiday, it’s just gymnastics, arty stuff and games really.

Soubriquet · 10/08/2023 10:42

Yes they like their arty stuff too. Colouring and drawing

My youngest is 11. She still plays with Barbies, and little character toys like Blue Nose Chums. Sometimes gets the farm out.

The teens will still play with Lego or the train set if I get it out.

BadgerFace · 10/08/2023 10:44

Mine are 7 and 10 and will still play for hours with their Schleich animal collection (quite complicated family saga adventures!). It helps that they like to play together although they also like solo games. They also like playing with Lego characters (mainly swapping heads, hair and bodies around) and magnatiles.

7 year old surprises me by getting out her Paw Patrol toys this morning and has been playing ever since (most likely because I keep asking if I can sell them as they never get used!).

Hatchimals and playmobil get used to a lease extent but there is a definite small world play theme in our house.

Oh and the teddy games. We have a ludicrous amount of soft toys. Including squishmallows which whilst I secretly love but take up SO much room!!

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 10/08/2023 10:45

My 7 year old rarely plays with toys. Christmas and birthdays are difficult because there's nothing he wants!

Slothlikemum · 10/08/2023 10:46

Mine have fairly controlled access to tech (Ds 7 and 10) so they do still play with Lego, bakugan, Pokémon, bey blades etc. And cars and trains too.

JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots · 10/08/2023 10:48

We don't have any games consoles so ds8 plays inside or plays out a lot. He'd rather be outside most of the time.

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 10/08/2023 10:49

My 16 year old still builds lego, although that's not quite 'playing'
He still does arts and crafts too.

Soubriquet · 10/08/2023 10:49

Teddies are everywhere too. Ds loves his teddies. Especially the squishmellows

My 8 year old doesn't play with toys much now, he loves Lego but I don't consider that a toy really. He likes kicking a ball around and playing outside, loves reading, drawing and playing his switch but he's kind of gone past the 'plastic tat' phase. He does like cuddly toys but doesn't play with them as such.

My 6 year old still plays with cars and things, but that's getting less now. We still have a lot of the typical plastic tat toys in the house because my three year old is still into all that, but the older two rarely take much notice now.

Literally just had this conversation with DH last night. We need to clear out our toys. Twins (10) don't play with anything anymore. They love art, dd makes paper craft stuff and DS animates using an app. They would watch YouTube all day so that has to be limited. Construction toys were never popular in my house, a disappointment to me as I love legs! No dolls were ever played with but it was all teddies, they had their own characters and relationships. We are currently choosing which teddies to give away but erring on the side of caution in case anyone changes their mind. They listen to music a lot on Spotify and enjoy the trampoline. Both read a lot, Harry potter is the current favourite in our house. Dd still climbs trees and goes off on her bike with friends. DS enjoys gaming so there are many arguments about this as he can get obsessed. They often play games together on different devices like Minecraft or Roblox chatting together all the time, I dont mind this too much.

LaMaG · 10/08/2023 11:12

*lego not legs!

GigiAnnna · 10/08/2023 11:14

Mine ask for toys and don't play with them, things like Fur Real pets. They want them but there's not much they can do with them. One of my daughters (7) loves Barbie, one of my sons (6) likes his cars and now and again will get the building blocks/ Lego and jigsaws out and they all enjoy craft. They all prefer going on the Ipads or switch but when they get bored of that, they will get the Barbies/ cars/ blocks out.10 year old doesn't play with toys but has lots of cuddly toys she will carry round and teenage DC hasn't played with toys since he was about 9.
