What Can I do for Work?

I'm 61, no degree and been out of the workplace for nearly 20 years. I've been self employed, working as best I can with disabilities but now I've just run out of steam and run out of ideas. I have benefits so I can try a few hours and work up if possible. But what to do and where to start? I also need to work from home. Any bright ideas anyone?

What did you do before you started your own business?

FictionalCharacter · 09/08/2023 21:26

You’ll need to give us a few clues! What was your self employed work, what skills do you have, what do you like doing, what do you not like doing?

Friends of mine who wfh work for the council, housing association, market research etc. with little or no experience.

so you can do hourly wfh jobs like Transcription and completing surveys on Prolific. max £10 per hour and it gets very dull after a while, but you can pick up hours when you want.

what skills do you have?

Thanks for the responses so far. I worked in advice for many years but got completely disillusioned in the end. Then I had a bookkeeping business but closed it down when I first got ill. I’ve done matched betting then let out my spare room on Airbnb. I’ve also done buying and selling but that doesn’t make money any more. I can’t do anything physical really. I’m good with numbers, methodical, good attention to detail, can write well and spell properly. I’m rubbish at interviews, work best on my own but I can be quite personable if I have to be. I just need to earn for 6 more years.

I think you should go on a website like Indeed, specify working from home and your hours and see where it takes you. Civil Service and your local council and NHS websites are also worth a look. Good luck!

There are some wfh jobs but I just don't have a CV or anything to put on a CV or any recent work references. Not sure how to tackle that issue.

You sound like you have alot of experience from what you listed above.

Rivermedway · 10/08/2023 16:25

Work references aren’t such a thing nowadays. CVs are different also, and are more about selling your skills, rather than listing the job. They’re more a cross between a letter of application and traditional cv. Search for cv’s online and they will guide you hiw to create one.
