NDN using our address on their P45 and Tax documents

I've just received a letter with my address on but when i've opened it, it was a p45 for my next door neighbour (who isnt meant to be able to work due to disabilties and get a whole host of benefits including housing benefits, pip and what ever else) but its got my address on it.

I'm guessing their doing this so that they don't have their housing benefit impacted in addition to losing whatever benefits they get due to working.

However i'm worried now what else are they putting in our address?!

What do I do? who do I speak to about this?

Do i need to report this somewhere as i'm worried about my house getting lots of debt linked to it?!

Some people on benefits will get P45s even if they aren’t working, for example if they have a pension (taken early through ill health etc). It doesn’t mean they are being fraudulent. He may have recently been moved to Universal Credit or was due some kind of tax or benefit adjustment.

It can be easy enough to choose the wrong house number from a drop down menu for example or mis-hear on the phone so could also be an innocent clerical error too.

I totally get that your experiences with bailiffs has made you stressed and suspicious but it isn’t necessarily anything fraudulent even if the guy is a twat. People say all sorts of things that may or may not be true.

How do you no that the the address isn’t wrong be mistake? They might have selected the wrong one when putting the address in.

It very well may be, but there are reasons I jumped to otherwise (as I've said to pp's)

So long as my household doesn't get impacted (which it seems it doesn't) i'm not fussed and will leave it to them to sort out if they wish :)

Well re your update, if you’ve read the P45 in that detail then maybe there’s something up but even so. Just send back as you say.

Yeah now I know I wont get a letter asking to pay their unpaid tax or debt I'm not too worried.

I'll return, and if it is an error then they'll know to sort it, if its fraud its none of my business! I'll stick a note on it suggest they start adding names to envelopes!

I'm a very anxious person, so immediately jump to the worst case scenario with these things - usually majorly over reacting!

Just take it next door and say you opened it by mistake and could they let HMRC know they have the wrong house number on their system.

Gilead · 09/08/2023 18:30

I’ve already pointed out that people on benefits get P45 because benefits are taxed at source. Just give it to your neighbour.

Flopsythebunny · 09/08/2023 19:04

Someone can work full time and claim pip. It they can also work part time and claim esa under the permitted work rules. if claiming esa, I they would get a p60.
A p45 is what you get when you stop working at a company

worriedandworries · 13/08/2023 14:26

Just got home after a few nights away to find another letter from a different company (not opened it so not sure what it is but this one has they're name and a return to sender address) in they're name.

I'm absolutely certain they're using our address instead of they're own.

I'm starting to get worried about what theyre doing now. This is the 2nd letter in a week and my DH has we had a few off them for them a few weeks ago too

Those pesky poor people eh? Always on a scam aren't they OP. 🙄

Yawn.

worriedandworries · 13/08/2023 15:17

What are you on about?

I'm getting multiple letters addressed to my ndn, and I'm worried about them using my address to tax, credit and fraud purposes - because its nows multiple companies sending letters

Wtf it got to do with being poor? Our ndn could be the richest person if the world and I still wouldn't want their p45 and other letters sent to my house

You could knock on their door and ask them why they are using your address and present them with the evidence. Then ask them why they are doing this.
See what they say about it

HotPringles · 13/08/2023 15:48

I would keep sending the letters back.

But I have to say I’d also be tempted to keep a record of what you’ve received too.

NotMyDayJob · 13/08/2023 15:51

I had a lengthy tax issue that I had to deal with with HMRC (not relevant so won't go into it) but it also came out that my address was wrong by one digit. The lady on the helpline said it was likely that someone at their end had just input it incorrectly and we just updated it on the basis of human error (it was nothing to do with the tax problem I just realised during the investigation). So it is possible there's just been a mistake

OddBoots · 13/08/2023 15:52

Do you mean P45 or is it a P60? Not that is matters really, it is just confusing me as people say that people on benefits do still get sent P45s.

VictoriaVenkman · 13/08/2023 16:11

Write on it 'Return to sender, unknown at this address' each and every time.

MaPaSpa · 13/08/2023 16:15

HMRC sent a P45 with no name. That’s not true though is it.

Erm the p45 came from the company they were working for?
It was in a hand written envelope - not the hmrc brown window envelope.

Why tf would I make the up for the Internet?

Honestly because I don't want to give them 'proof of address' for my address.

I'd rather return to sender with a note saying no one with this names ever lived here

If you want to be a smartie pants you probably need to know how P45s work and how to read the OPs posts

If it's happening with multiple different senders it is odd, I get thay someone might want to give a false address but it seems a bit daft id you aren't going to get letters that you actually need

What would be the plan of the ndn fo get them back and have a plausible explanation?
