How to listen to audiobooks toddler

Does anyone play audiobooks to their toddler? I think mine would love it but I'd rather not spend £60 on a Yoto - unless they are worth getting in which case he could get one for Christmas...

We have an iPad we could use - do you have to pay for audiobooks or are they free somewhere?

Sorry total audiobook novice here 🤣

Yoto players are brilliant, dd has had one since she was 2 and listens to it every night! They 'grow' with the child if you see what I mean, with loads of different age ranges of stories, plus the radio and 'pod cast' features are brill.

Thanks @blobblobblobfish
Is it expensive to keep buying the stories though? I can't get my head around how they work!

Years ago, I used to borrow children's audio book cds from the library (and then convert them to mp3). I don't know if libraries still lend out cds but it might be worth checking.

I used a very cheap CD player and secondhand story CDs at that age.

The cbeebies radio podcast might be worth looking at, there are also some children's story podcasts on Spotify.

Same. I wanted something cheap & cheerful that my toddler could use easily himself - great big buttons to hit play etc. I felt an iPad or similar was too expensive a gadget to leave in his room on his own, toddlers aren't known for being gentle 😂

Do you belong to your local library? We have access to an app called Libby using our library membership to log in. It has loads of audio books you can borrow free of charge

We have an echo dot (super cheap during amazon prime days) I think I paid £20 or something. I have an audible subscription which has lots of kids books on and often audible have sales with loads of Julia Donaldson books down to £3.

Yes this is what we used to do Dd2 loved audiobooks and would listen to them at night, also our library now has a digital service maybe yours has too op and you could borrow audio books for her.

Tbh, you don't even really need the cards, there is so much free stuff for them on the app!

There is a Yoto club where you pay for new cards at a discount every month, but I've not done that. There is also a fab swap/sell group on fb, so you can get the cards either free as a swap or for a few quid. Or you can make your own cards with your own choice of music/stories etc.

We just use an echo dot with a child's profile set up, linked to my audible account but the child's profile means you can only allow certain books on it (so DS can't merrily listen to my latest murder intrigue story).

They quickly get the hang of the commands. I often hear a 3am "Alexa!!! Play zog" and if it that means he's not getting up and waking me up then I'm good with that!
