3 year old crying out with sore knee in the night every few weeks

  • I thought it might be growing pains. He wakes up in the night, will sally through to us in our room crying that his knee hurts. He winces like he's in pain every 10/20 seconds then falls back to sleep.

It's really disruptive when he has it, keeps us up a lot of the night and he's really upset, and seems to really be hurting.

The first time I thought it was sprained or something, but in the morning he was right as rain and couldn't remember anything about it. This has been the case every time.

He's awake now, im in his bed and he's crying out, any ideas?

Im going to try and book docs today

Is he hyper mobile? It's common for children who are to get pain like this - it's to do with the bones growing and the ligaments not 'keeping up' with the growth.

My kids are adults now. We used to rub their sore knees with vicks vaporub, magic stuff.

It sounds like it's worth getting it checked out.

My DD occasionally gets growing pains at the backs of her knees at bedtime. Especially at age 4-5. I usually give her some Calpol to help ease the pain. It's never been so bad that it wakes her up at night though.

I'd get this checked if I were you

hyper mobile was my first thought too. Definitely worth getting checked out.

Worth getting checked. My daughter has Osgood Shlatters so might be worth ruling out although he may be a little young for that but something to tick off the list x

My eldest went through this. Regularish wake ups for a while, crying with pain. Very distressing really as they were inconsolable. But always OK in the morning. Usually happened after a very active day. I had the same myself as a child. Growing pains they called it then. I find that the best thing is a hot water bottle at bed time if there’s an inkling of knee ache, and some topical magnesium cream. Than some calpol if they wake, and a firm leg massage.
