Things to do in Whitland, Pembrokeshire with 2 older teens

Could you help me out with finding things to do for two adults and two older teens, well, one of them officially an adult now really, for the next 4 days or so?
We can manage gentle walks of around 5/6 miles, pref circular. Would love to hire bikes. Nice pubs for dinner. Anything interesting to see? A show? Comedy? We have a car so can drive a bit if necessary. One of the teens is very into quirky things, thrift market type thing. Thank you all.

Go to Narberth, cheese's festival is on Saturday. There is a vintage shop called Bizzare Vintage there which is great to wander around. Great deli for food. For action try Wild Lakes go for food in the tipi. You could drive up to Cardigan where they have a pizza teepee by the river, Poppit sands for the beach. Saundersfoot or Tenby too are good. Oakwood for a theme park although i do not rate it but worth a look.

Bike hire or watersports at Llys y Fran

cheerypip · 08/08/2023 14:27

Llansteffan - nice circular walk up to castle and back along the beach. There is a short (2-3 mile) and longer version of the walk.

Thank you @mumonthehill that all sounds fab. I am told we're in SA34 0QY.
Wondering about boat trips. Any ideas?

Is a recreated Iron Age village (with shop!) quirky enough?

Castell Henllys is a interesting place. It has a more gentle set of paths as well as steeper slopes and activities. It's part of Pembrokeshire National Park which an old mate of mine works for.

Oh yes if you go to Castell henllys then also pop to Pentre Ifan as these are the same stone as stonehenge. Newport close by with great places to eat. Llys yr fran good shout for biking and has a nice cafe. I think there are boat trips from Saundersfoot, definitely from Fishguard. Also if heading to Newport you can walk Dinas Head which has fab views.

Ahhh this is where I grew up! So much to do!

  • Folly Farm is a zoo and funfair which caters for all ages and definitely worth the trip!
  • Oakwood theme park - haven't been for years but remember it being v fun as a kid/teenager
  • Heatheron- go-karts, mini golf etc.
  • Beaches- you're spoilt for choice really - Amroth, Saundersfoot, Tenby
  • If you want to drive a bit there's a lovely walk from Stackpole Quay to Bosherston and back which takes you over one of the prettiest beaches (Barafundle)
  • Carmarthen Town centre has a cinema etc. If you're looking for something like that

Thank you all so much, literally looking at every single thing that's been recommended.
I wonder if anyone can recommend a nice place to eat, we like nice food but without the nonsense.
Also, maybe a place to have cream tea, just for the hell of it?
Any really quirky shops, apart from the vintage one in Narberth?

In Narberth there is a wonderful deli/restaurant called ultra comida - can't recommend it highly enough. There's lots of options for boat trips from Tenby & you can just book on the day. I'd suggest looking at going to Caldey Island. Nice 20 minute boat ride & then a few nice circular walks for you to do whilst there. I'm also a big fan of oakwood. They have some excellent rides & the queues are tiny compared to the usual parks. If you just manage your expectations (it's not disneyworld!) Then you can have a great time. Enjoy your holiday

AutumnCrow · 08/08/2023 15:47

I loved Oakwood! It has that amazing old wooden rollercoaster (Megaphobia?) that is historical and bloody scary at the same time.

londonmummy1966 · 08/08/2023 15:52

Narberth will be great for a vintage minded DC - several antique shops and some decent bargains there.

A trip to Caldey Island needs to be on a dry day as there is no real shelter on the island. If you do go take a picnic lunch and then have tea at the tea room. Buy the milk chocolate it is amazingly good. ALso take swimmers as the beach you arrive on is safe for bathing and a lot less crowded than Tenby.

If the weather is less kind then the seal safari trip is fun and the guides really knowledgeable about the wildlife on the two islands.

My DC did paddleboarding in Tenby and coasteering from Stackpole - the coasteering was with these guys who also do kayaking -https://www.outerreefsurfschool.com/surf-lessons/family-coasteering-in-pembrokeshire-wales/ if the weather drizzly rather than torrential rain this sort of thing is fine as you'll get wet anyway.

For food I have a few recommendations, depending how much you want to spend? I'll use '£'!

  1. Dexters Carmarthen - probably the best restaurant in the area (in my opinion!) £££ (definitely would need to book)
  1. Fox and Hounds in Bancyfelin which is a small village between Whitland and Carmarthen - very good pub food ££
  1. Florentinos - in Carmarthen or Tenby - good Italian food ££ (would probs need to book)
  1. Whitland specific - Cowpots Pizza - think you can sit it or takeaway but it is good!

Those would be my top three on the rare occasions I go back.

For cream tea I think you would probably be able to rock up to most cafes on the coast/Narberth/Carmarthen!

Have fun 😀

KimberleyClark · 08/08/2023 16:09

You are about half an hour away from Tenby and three quarters of an hour from the National Botanic Garden of Wales.

mumonthehill · 08/08/2023 16:19

Lots of independent shops in Narberth. Stackpole Inn very good for food. Stone Crab in kilgetty great, Mad Toms in Narberth for seafood. The Grove up market but do a good afternoon tea. Saundersfoot fish and chips the one at the entrance to the harbour car park very good. Coast very expensive but fab at Coppet Hall.

BanditsOnTheHorizon · 08/08/2023 16:24

Visit Dobbies Grave on Freshwater West beach, it's a lovely beach and good fun to go and read all the messages on the stones and socks that are left in a large pile.

Sodie · 08/08/2023 16:31

@BanditsOnTheHorizon the socks have gone! There is a piece in the local paper about it today.
Pembrokeshire person here (hate the place) we are below the landsker line. Anyway llys y fran for hiring bikes, pretty sure you can also do this now at scolton. The walk around the lily pond, you will get to see the beautiful otters. St davids is always worth a visit, we are atheist but the cathedral is so spiritual. Caldey or any of the islands. No matter what age go at low tide to Sandy haven in Herbrandston and crab off the board. On Thursdays you can visit the shell cottage which is over the preselis. Also there is a waterfall you can swim in near the the shell cottage.
