Head lice 2 year old tips

My 2 year old has head lice. I found one this morning but she wouldn't let me have a thorough look as she gets upset whenever I try and do anything with her hair (washing is nightmare).

does any one have any tips? She's just turned 2 so she is still little and not that susceptible to bribery. Her hair is also fine and whispy and comes down to her neck so there isn't much if it. I'm tempted to shave it all off but don't want to traumatise the poor child.

I have just bought a nit busters comb and a plastic comb. Is she too young for solution? I don't want to burn her skin with hair straighteners!!

im sure I have them too because my head feels itchy but I don't mind using lotion/straighteners.

Get the nitnot treatment. It's like a goopy oil that you soak the hair in, it smothers the lice and kills the eggs, and makes the hair very slippery to be able to comb it through. You repeat it a week later. It's worked for DS really well, he has long curly hair that is a nightmare to comb!

Solution doesn’t work well anymore (the lice became resistant). Sit her down with lots of snacks and the tv on her favourite show. Use clips to section out the hair and comb through. Tap the content of the comb onto a piece of paper after each pass. You should spend about 30 minutes on one head.

if you can get her to do it, sit her on a large sheet of paper that will catch anything that drops out as well (burn it after if possible)

people say tea tree oil helps - bath to deter lice and to dry angle the hair as you comb.

comb daily for a week. Drop down to every other day for the next week. Then do a check comb every 3 days to a week for a while.

and you have to check everyone in the household.

Nitty gritty comb and conditioner. Comb every other day to every 3rd day until you're sure they're gone. That's really the only think that works. Tea tree oil shampoo will help too.

I shove mine in front of a tablet/phone to watch something.

And it shouldn't take 30 minutes. I can do my 5 year old with short ish hair in about 5 minutes. You don't need to get every single one every time, you just need to get most/all the adults to interrupt the life cycle of laying new eggs.

I'm an expert - been going it several times a week for a year because there is a particularly nitty grotty child in my dc's class who has waist length hair and has a constant infestation that her parents/the school will not deal with.

We find some solutions work better than others, for us NitRid is best and I like their comb best too.

just combing out with conditioner hasn’t worked for us and tbh is just as faffy as the chemicals.

I put mine in front of a screen for the time it takes.

Sadly they’re reoccurring through school and it’s only now that we’re in the holidays that the cycle of clearing it and then getting reinfected is broken 😡

Nit wits from amazon. I tried a lot of things before this and this one worked as it gets the eggs too

Lkahsvtv · 08/08/2023 11:05

If you ask the chemist they can give you shampoo that’s ok for 2 year olds. I put mine in the bath and the did the comb with conditioner in her hair, used a tangle tweezer first then the comb.
Also wash towels, bedding, coats etc; online it says you don’t need to but I take a heavy handed approach to try and get on top of it very quickly

Also treat the adults in the home just in case

Fouramclub · 08/08/2023 12:21

Thank you everyone. I'm going to speak to the chemist later to see what they have

does anyone know if hair straighteners kill the buggers and their eggs?

we both have brown hair. Mine is dark brown. Will the lice and eggs be harder to spot?

I'm so worried this is going to be a recurring problem. I don't mind combing every day but DD will. I'll try and make it as fun as possible 😬

I second the nitty gritty comb. I wash and condition then come through every day until I've had 2 clear days. Then I wait a week and check they've all gone. It takes time but it's the only way I found that works.

Jazsimone · 08/08/2023 12:42

@Fouramclub

Ermmm no your straighteners will not kill them. They live and breed on the scalp
