Error on marriage certificate

Got married in April and just realised marriage certificate has spelt mother in laws middle name wrong. It's one letter wrong. A z instead of an s.

My DH is Italian and we'll be using the certificate to apply for an Italian passport for DS so it will get translated and apostilled etc.

I've looked on the UK website to get it corrected but it says that you need to send in documents to prove updated information. MIL lives halfway across the world not in Italy so we wouldn't be able to send in her passport to show her name and even getting a certified copy and having it posted could take forever and be a massive faff.

I'm tempted just to leave it and see if the consulate won't notice. I think they may have DH mother details on file as she is also a citizen so could potentially check but not sure.

Any experience of this?

There are online companies that can notorise documents so it shouldn’t be a huge faff to get it sorted out regardless of where your MIL is

I went through my Italian passport renewal application at the consulate a few years ago. They will definitely notice - question is will they accept it’s a typo and process it regardless. That I don’t know. If your MIl Lived here before moving abroad they will have her details

Personally I’d get it corrected.

I'd be tempted to leave it!

My foreign marriage certificate is wrong too translation shows the error (my UK birth city spelt wrong) as a direct translation but it's not caused any issue as correct spelling is on birth certificate and passport etc.

You'll have to pay to correct yours though with the right documents it can be amended at your local office. Just probably isn't really worth it. And since MILs name won't be on DS's passport I don't think it's something that needs doing.

The apostille is only really verifying that the marriage certificate is genuine - which it is. They will check the signature of the registrar but won’t check the facts within it so I can’t see your MIL’s middle name will be a problem.

I would be included to leave it be for now.

I once had a passport that spelt my name wrong by one letter. I didn't bother trying to correct it and it caused no issues.

MIL never lived on Italy. The whole family are second and third generation and born in Brazil so not sure it makes a difference?

My Dh has Italian citizenship ship through MIL Family line though which makes me worry they'll check.

We may try and send it for now and address it if they see it.

Am I right in thinking on the actual uk register only fathers names appear? If that's the case could I just get local register Office to update certificates rather than register?

Marriage after May 2021 has whichever parents you choose to include - mother, father, step-parents. Before this date was father only.
You can't now remove MIL/update certificate.

I've been through this, not only did they not notice but the translation added a couple more errors in for good measure! Passports all issued with no problem.
