Unenrolled deed poll name change for adult and child?

I need to explain first of all that I have huge anxiety and am really struggling with this at the moment.
I need to change mine and my child's surnames.
I can't get my head round if the unenrolled is OK to use? If it's possible to use for under 18's and whether I have to just print my own or do an official form?
Please could someone explain it in very basic terms?

Do you have permission of anyone else with parental responsibility to change the child's name? (If they are under 16).

I don't know anything about deed polls for children, but FWIW, I namechanged with an unenrolled deed poll as an adult, and while it is perfectly legal and I have managed everything I need so far, it is also an utter pain. Really. I hate paying for things that are meant to be free, but it would have been worth it. It was such a massive hassle arguing the toss with people all the time that it was legal.

I still regularly have to go extra rounds with people to explain yes, it's legal; yes, this is the 'real' deed poll.

Dc and I have all changed our names via unenrolled deed poll.
We printed our own from somewhere, can't remember where, then had them signed by 2 witnesses.

You need permission from anyone who has PR for a child under 16 though.

change your name here, you keep the same NI number obviously, and I don’t think they need a deed poll.

The way I understand it, the point at which a deed poll is a legal document is sort of when you start using it. For example I can change my name right now using that document. But if I then put it in a drawer and forget about it, nothing happens. If I take it to the bank, send it to the gas/water company, and generally use it to change all my documentation, that’s the point of it.

Tell HMRC about a change to your personal details

Yes, but in practical terms, your bank and utilities companies probably won't let you use a deed poll alone to change your name.

You end up in a tricky situation, because most institutions require you to have a deed poll and proof that the name you're using is legit. So the bank will want a passport or a utility bill; the DVLA will want a bank statement, etc. etc.

It's not that it's not possible, just it can be a right faff and I wish I'd known that!

We changed our names at the bank and DS1 got his provisional license using just a deed poll.

Once you have a passport most places change it quite happily with an unenrolled deed, except virgin media.

GoingToBeLessRubbishAtLife · 07/08/2023 20:40

The only place I had trouble with was the Halifax. Only when I said ‘ok I’ll just close my account’ did they suddenly decide that a deed poll was okay. No problems anywhere else.

It must vary from place to place. We didn't find it a faff at all.

Mind you I haven't changed it everywhere yet. Maybe I've just been lucky so far!

GoingToBeLessRubbishAtLife · 07/08/2023 20:40

And since that initial flurry of changes, the only place I’ve ever had to show it again has been for DBS updates.
