Where to start organising my home?

I'll preface this by saying my home is actually clean and tidy. But I need to sort things out still behind the cupboard doors and clothes for me and my son. I want to live a more frugal/simple life rather than having loads of products and things I don't use.

How do I tackle it? Should I just book a couple of days off work and tackle it. I can't do in the evening and weekends as I have my son who is ridiculously hyper. Should I just throw everything away too. I feel stressed by all my stuff. I hate stuff.

I gather all the "same" items together.

So winter coats, get them all in one place, charity shop ones you won't wear, store any that are too big say, have the ones you are going to keep and any that are too worn to go to charity shop throw away.

Deal with these complete piles first. As in put the bag for charity by your door or in car boot and take them the next day.

It's no use sorting without getting stuff out of the house.

Maybe start with something small that's bothering you/difficult to use. Just one small cupboard.

I am currently sitting on my bed with two bin bags for the charity shop and about twelve piles of clothes on the floor waiting to go back in my wardrobe and chest of drawers. I knew I should have just chosen one to clear! Now I've lost my oomph and am mumsnetting instead 🙄.

I have had good success with just emptying a drawer quickly and then just giving it a wipe and putting back the essentials.

I think I'm at a stage where I'm quite willing to send it all to the charity shop rather than try to find space for it all.

If you would definitely finish it in the couple of days off work then go for it, I know I would just waste time though!

You can find one of those checklists to print and check off online that are handy. Or make your own list and work from that.

I will say it's really satisfying opening a cupboard or drawer and being able to see the contents.

Good luck!

I put YouTube videos on when I’m doing it. Feels less arduous. Swedish Death cleaning is interesting as well as Marie Kondo.

Another vote for Marie Kondo! Start with your sock drawer (easy, quick, non-emotional)

Another vote for Marie Kondo! Not only does she help you declutter but she helps you arrange what you do have to be easier to see & access.

Start with the stuff your DC has grown out of, whether it's clothes, shoes, equipment or toys.

I find this helpful too - pick an item and gather everything you have that's the same type of thing. It really helps with figuring out what to keep and what to get rid of.
