What's your favourite Leonard Cohen song?

I've recently rekindled my love for Leonard Cohen and am playing a lot of his music. I think my favourite song is Suzanne. What's yours?

Stranger Song, saw him live and it was amazing!

Off topic, but how recent was this? I thought The Chelsea had closed? (Jealous)

Last week actually! It recently reopened after years of renovation. I think they’ve done a really good job of it; they’ve tried to retain something of its character and atmosphere whilst at the same time making it into a classy place to stay. There are artworks by current and past tenants on all the walls - a real eclectic mix. I loved it.

There’s a documentary called ‘Dreaming Walls’ currently available on Amazon Prime which I found really interesting, about the permanent residents and their lives there, and how they’ve coped with the renovation and change of management. Fascinating.

It's too hard to just choose one but perhaps Famous Blue Raincoat or Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye.

But my favourite line from a LC song comes from Everybody knows:
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows

and always makes me smile.

That's.fantastic news. I've always wanted to stay there..Thanks?

imactuallyfine · 07/08/2023 11:45

Impossible question

I did try

I cried when he died

Handbagger99 · 07/08/2023 11:49

The Partisan
Dance me to the end of love
Famous Blue Raincoat

I saw him in concert a few years ago. Mesmerising.

SchrodingersKitty · 07/08/2023 11:54

So many. Really reminds me of my late DH and all the travels we had accompanied by LC’s music. Maybe Tower of Song, Dance Me to the End of Love (though I’d be in floods if I listened to that now), or Suzanne. Even though I’ve always thought that tea and oranges don’t really go together.

Marmighty · 07/08/2023 12:00

Omg so many. Thank you for this thread. I was lucky enough to see him live twice, and this has reignited the flame, I’m going to be listening to him exclusively for the next few days and trying to find some appropriate recommendations for DD age8. Everybody knows is fantastic, but so are pretty much all his songs from all his eras.

Awittyfool · 07/08/2023 12:04

Never heard any of songs before but someone chose “Everybody Knows” on Desert Island Disc’s and it’s now on my playlist.

ZestFest · 07/08/2023 12:06

My favourite changes depending on where I am in my life and relationships/emotions. Such an incredible talent and man. I'm having a great wallow in his music now! Thanks for the thread. 😍

viques · 07/08/2023 12:13

I am sitting on my hands so I don’t go onto YouTube and waste the next three hours wallowing in Cohen.

Saw him at the O2. Mesmerising.

ZestFest · 07/08/2023 12:14

viques - do it! You can wave to me, I'm there!

Cannotthinkofanametoday · 07/08/2023 12:23

So long Marianne, but I love First Aid Kit’s cover of it best of all, (Love First Aid Kit anyway!!)

xanthippe8 · 07/08/2023 12:24

Dance Me To The End Of Love, even though I know it's definitely not a love song.

The first song that drew me to him was The Story Of Isaac...I don't have a religious bone in my body!

I am slightly obsessed with You Want It Darker

Absolutely! It's the one I keep returning to.

No, I am standing firm. I have things to do.

But I will confess that should I ever be asked to do Strictly, and be given Gio as my partner then Dance Me to the End of Love would be our Argentine Tango song………..

Lzzyisgod · 07/08/2023 12:27

Definitely Dance me (to the end of love)

Although the song did take a darker meaning on when I understood what it really is about

loislovesstewie · 07/08/2023 12:28

So long Marianne, and that letter! OMG, I cry even thinking about it. Just love that man.

Velvetbee · 07/08/2023 12:30

Dance me to the end of love.

Oh same.

I saw him at the 02 as well - best gig I've ever attended. His energy just radiated.

I saw him at the O2 also and Birmingham, managed to get a seat at Birmingham on the aisle about six rows back from the stage so could go right down the front for the encores, loved him singing Closing Time. I was also amazed how he knelt down so long and got up so easily for some of the songs, I'm sure I couldn't do that and I was quite a few years younger than he was

guinnessguzzler · 07/08/2023 12:59

Another vote for Famous Blue Raincoat from me but I'm going to look up some of the nominations on here that I haven't yet heard.

I only recently learned that Jarvis Cocker is a big Cohen fan and as a huge Pulp fan this makes a lot of sense and seems so obvious now. Both amazing storytellers more than anything else.

TenOhSeven · 07/08/2023 12:59

I can't pick just one but my top 3 are Take This Waltz, Alexandra Leaving and Famous Blue Raincoat.
