Tranexamic acid question

Airbnbquestion · 07/08/2023 03:39

My dd took one dose of tranexamic acid on day one of her period but didn’t take it again after that as it wasn’t heavy.

Now on day 5 it has got really heavy (which is a pattern it usually follows) and I am wondering if it is okay for her to re-start the tranexamic acid in the middle of her period during the really heavy days - her periods last about 11 days in total usually - she is being referred to a gynaecologist due to how painful, heavy and disruptive they are.

Also - is it okay to take it in the night on an empty stomach?

Thanks a lot.

We are part way through our holiday and due to fly to see my Dad today - not sure if she will be able to manage this as on really bad days she is off school etc…

Yes it definitely is, as I do this with my period and my medication. What is she prescribed to take? My script says three times a day, for four days of my heaviest part of my period.

Yes it's fine to both questions.

Airbnbquestion · 07/08/2023 03:54

Okay thank you so much.

Her prescription says up to 3 times a day for a period of a number of days - can’t remember exactly as we have brought only the pills with us. I knew that you can only take it for up to 5 days but wasn’t sure about starting it in the middle (or re-starting but she only took the one dose at the beginning) so thank you very much that’s really helpful.

I feel like if I don’t take it regularly, I.e. continue even if it lessens the flow, it comes back with a vengeance. I’ve got into a bit of a rhythm with it after a few months now - it does help!

Airbnbquestion · 07/08/2023 04:02

Yes I agree @EverybodyLTB that my dd should try doing this - taking it even if her period is light - is this what you do? Or is it that your period starts off heavy and the tranexamic acid makes it lighter but you continue with it?

I think it kind of feels counterintuitive which is why she stops taking it or only feels the need to when her period gets awful.

My daughter was told to take it over the 3 heaviest days- ie follow her pattern. For her it is day 2,3,4. I don't think taking it again on day 5 should be a problem. It can also be taken as a preventative when you are going for elective surgery (eg having a tooth pulled) so can't see how she wants to take it being an issue.

Mine always starts really heavy so it’s hard to say, I have to quickly take a few doses at the start - and previously I’ve trialled stopping taking it when the flow reduces right down, but then it comes back super heavy. It only stays low throughout when I continue to take it a day or two into it being really reduced. I feel like I’m not making much sense I’m sorry 😣

It does make sense and is helpful thanks @EverybodyLTB . Thanks also @StrangerYears the concept of following her pattern is helpful.

Part of the issue with it not working terribly well for my dd in the past is the lack of consistency with which she takes it as she either gets overwhelmed by her period and misses the window when she could take it, or if things feel better doesn’t want to think about anything period related including medication.
