Why are we all having nosebleeds?

Cl0udni93 · 06/08/2023 21:50

Me, dp and our dc have all had a nosebleed in the past week. Dp and youngest ds often get them but our other dc rarely do and I haven't in over 10 years!
I'm not sure what has caused them.

Just curious if this has happened to anyone else or if anyone has any ideas why this might be happening.

Apparently it can be a covid symptom (but so can most things!)

CantThinkOfANameAtAll · 06/08/2023 22:05

It can be a sign of dry nasal membranes.

Dehydration
Antihistamines
Nasal sprays for decongestant or hayfever
Sudafed type medication

My DD had very heavy nose bleeds for a fortnight. I made her drink more and use a saline nasal spray. They stopped (although it could have been the end of a virus).

Defiantlynot41 · 06/08/2023 22:13

We both had this as early Covid symptom Shock

Thunderstorms coming (change in air pressure)

cherryassam · 06/08/2023 22:15

Covid or are you all using antihistamines or hayfever spray as PPs suggest?

Or have you been somewhere with air con on fierce all the time?

FussyPud · 06/08/2023 22:52

For my son they’re a migraine indicator. I sometimes get them with air pressure changes.

MargaretThursday · 06/08/2023 22:59

Can't it be a sign of carbon monoxide?
Have you got an alarm to check?

PinkFootstool · 06/08/2023 23:15

Let me know if you find out! 5 weeks of horrific daily nosebleeds, oral antibiotics, cream antibiotics up my nose, saline solution, antihistamines, steroid nasal spray, and currently absolutely nothing.... And still the bastard bleeds.

I'm demanding a referral for cauterisation tomorrow, as I can't live like this. However only ENT do it, GPs no longer offer it. I dread to think how long I'll be waiting!!

caringcarer · 06/08/2023 23:22

I think it's something to do with a change of air pressure.

Dotcheck · 06/08/2023 23:23

Hay fever?

Have you tried vaseline up your nose? I used to suffer a lot and that was the only thing that seemed to help

BorneoBound · 06/08/2023 23:28

Agree maybe its an air pressure thing - DS has had two nose bleeds this week. I think it's been years since his last one.

Nat6999 · 06/08/2023 23:53

Ds is back at ENT this week about his nosebleeds. He's been having then at least once a week since he was 12, I'm hoping they will cauterise it, for some reason most of his nosebleeds are at night.

elliemac209 · 07/08/2023 07:33

It is usually a superficial bacterial infection in the nose. This is especially likely if you are all getting them as you are likely passing the bacteria between each other. Speak to your GP to get a topical antibiotic cream and it should sort it out.

ciscowhispered · 07/08/2023 08:06

As someone else has said, it can be a symptom of carbon monoxide poisoning. Given how serious this can be and how easy it is to check, I'd be doing that first. Either getting a detector today or replacing the batteries in your existing one.

Mumdiva99 · 07/08/2023 08:09

Hayfever. Both my boys suffer with them around may/June. Only thing that helps is daily antihistamines and steroid nose spray. They stop in July.
But once the nose lining is damaged lots of things bring them on - getting hot, high blood pressure - so running and exercise etc Sneezing.

Bittercup · 07/08/2023 08:11

Have you recently invested in a fan? They can really dry the air and cause this.

GreyCarpet · 07/08/2023 08:13

I'd put it down to the air pressure. Always used to cause nosebleeds in me as a child. That and headaches.

Abra1t · 07/08/2023 08:15

Last time I had Covid it was heralded with a sudden nosebleed.

Mstxxx · 07/08/2023 08:17

Could be a number of things, in my experience it is actually quite difficult to figure out and can be scary. Dry nose due to weather, picking the nose subconsciously, a blood condition

In 2020 I woke up one day to blood dripping out of my nose, it stopped after a minute or so and I logged into WFH. On and off all day until it weren’t stopping at 6pm. Phoned 111 who was very patronising & asked if the blood was around 2 cups or more which I said it was and he laughed and told me if that’s true then I need to go to A&E. Went there and they bandaged the nose and left me in the waiting room, bled through the bandages within 10 mins and kept getting paper towels until eventually I started throwing up blood and everyone else waiting was quite alarmed so they rushed me into the ward. At this point a huge clot had started forming that was bigger than my nose and they had to syringe it out 🤢 there was a mountain of paper towels in the corner from all the blood. Put a tampon type thing in my nose that worked for a few hours and sent me home. Whilst waiting for the taxi it started bleeding again 10x worse and this time they pinned me down to the bed with their elbows and inserted a balloon type catheter thing into my nose and sinuses while awake. Broke my nose to do that. Had to keep it in for three days and stay in the hospital and my whole face swelled up. They put me on A surgical ward as the last resort if the bleeding didn’t stop would be to cut off a blood vessel or something in my leg (something like that!)

They ran tests and nothing! Still no idea why that happened and I’ve never had a nosebleed before or after that. I do have a very dry nose all the time however so I feel that contributed to it or popped a blood vessel in there. But I think people really underestimate nose bleeds so if the blood isn’t stopping or something seems off then get it checked out 🙏🏼

SeaToSki · 07/08/2023 08:18

As a PP said its a sign of carbon monoxide poisoning (not carbon dioxide). Do you have a house alarm?

FlyingUnicornWings · 07/08/2023 08:30

Another vote for carbon monoxide. Get a detector asap.

SoggyDoggyWalks · 07/08/2023 08:41

Have you been cycling? I started having daily nosebleeds when I started cycling to work. Air drying out nasal membranes. It settled after a week. But as PP have said check your house for carbon monoxide too.

Cl0udni93 · 07/08/2023 14:12

We have a carbon monoxide alarm which had new batteries in last year. It's just a bit odd as I haven't had a nosebleed in so long and for us all to get one the same week seems strange.

Are you using any aerosol products or have any air fresheners around? Me and DH both had sore cuts in our noses which coincided with an automatic spray air freshener, healed up when we got rid of it.
