Knee pain, what should I do?

So, I posted a variation of this in chat on Tuesday but had no replies. Am posting here as I really don't know what to do. The only differences between this post and my original are the dates / current circumstances.

I fell down by the swimming pool on a holiday abroad a week ago today. I didn't contact medical advice at the time as I could walk on my leg and because we would have had to pay significantly out of pocket and claim it back but didn't have the funds to pay out. Plus didn't think it was too serious as could walk on it. Plus was coming home in a few days from the injury, am home now.

A week ago today I slipped and fell around the pool. Fell at a bit of a funny angle and quite hard (I'm not a small lady). My right knee took a bashing and so did my right elbow. I kind of slipped backwards but landed sideways if that makes sense as I twisted as I fell, I didn't hit my head though so at least that's something.

I could walk straight away so was happy no serious injuries, just a bit tender from the fall. I can walk fine but since the fall my kneecap is tender and hurts to even lightly brush it with my fingers and if I press harder it's so painful. There is no obvious selling and no bruising that I can see. Pain relief not helping though it doesn't hurt when I walk, only when I touch it. My right hip has started to hurt now, though probably because I have been walking funny due to my knee.

I'm worried now I've got a fracture or something but my husband thinks I'm mad and says I wouldn't be able to walk if I did and it's probably a bruise but when I had a hairline fracture in my ankle years ago I could walk and it only hurt to touch it which is why I'm worried as so similar to now with my knee.

I feel so embarrassed too about the fall. I'm bloody 36 not 86 😣😣

I'm thinking urgent treatment centre is probably better than a GP as it's trauma related and they may need to X-ray. But I'm not sure if this is the best course of action?

Thanks

You could take that to GP.
soft tissue injuries are slower to start swelling & slower to heal than broken bones

Just go to A& E and have it xrayed. You could be increasing the damage by walking on it. Look after it as it sounds like it needs attention. No need to be embarrassed. Anyone can fall.

Our local A&E are posting on social media to only attend in life threatening situations due to how busy they are. But we have a minor injuries unit too that do X-rays so I could give them a visit

Ok, I thought as it was due to an injury and still bad a week later maybe a GP won't be able to do anything. I'll whack an econsult out to them tomorrow morning and see what they suggest

I fractured my kneecap a few years ago. It was very painful and swollen but I could walk on it after first few days. It wasn't discovered in first X-ray, but second one about 3 weeks later as it wasn't improving. I'd go and get it checked properly as I then had to use crutches for about 6 weeks.

I would have thought it's the bruising coming out, and the swelling. Your hip will definitely be from you walking differently to protect your knee. Wait until your ankle joins in with the fun!

It's most likely a stained ligament.
Knees are quite complex joints and are painful when it's not perfectly aligned
Have you been taking ibuprofen?
Using ice( bag of frozen peas) will help reduce the pain
If nothing helps then go to minor injuries
As a veteran of orthopaedics, soft tissues take longer to heal then breaks in my experience

ididntthough · 06/08/2023 23:05

Minor injuries I agree. Definitely rest and elevate. Recovery from ligament injuries can vary depending on whether you rest it properly so you should be careful until you know. Good luck

Definitely minor injuries. They can send you on to A&E if appropriate. We delayed with a knee injury. It wasn't the right thing to do.
