And changed to married name?

I’ve done driving license and banks/credit cards, shopping accounts.

Who else? We own a mortgaged house together, do I need to tell land registry?
HMRC?

Definitely HMRC (and payroll at work) as there are tax benefits. Doctor\dentist will probably want to know.

You don't need to tell anyone.

What?

Why on earth would you need to tell TV Licencing!

You don't need to tell anybody.

Phew. That's what I was thinking. I'm having a civil partnership soon and wasn't planning on telling anyone. I'm not changing my name.

The point is if you are changing your name it makes sense to change it everywhere. I forgot to change it with one account that paid me an annual dividend by cheque. It was an utter pain when the cheque arrived because by then I’d changed my name on my bank accounts and couldn’t cash it! Eventually they reissued the cheque in my married name but it was a faff and I wish I’d just remembered to change with them in the first place.

Yes, you don’t have to change your name etc etc - but some people still choose to (even if merging names, choosing a new one, double barrelling or a DH changing his) so it’s useful to have a comprehensive list.

If you’re not changing your name then you know that none of this applies to you 🤷‍♀️
I now have a different surname, if my official documents show one name, I’m wondering if I needed to inform certain places, land registry for example.

On that note, do I actually need to inform land registry or does it not matter as the house was bought in my maiden name?

It is a bloody palava though, I’ll give you that!

If you own your own car you will need to inform the DVLA.
I believe it's a different department within a department to the driving licences.

MissCherryCakeyBun · 06/08/2023 17:33

Yes to the Land Registry www.gov.uk/registering-land-or-property-with-land-registry/update-or-correct-the-register

BrunchBunch · 06/08/2023 17:34

Yes obviously my suggestions were for people changing their name! Actually it was from my list of who I had to tell when changing my address, which I saved to make it easier in the future, but changing your name at the same places can be helpful if you want everything to match, with bank accounts and other accounts being in the same name etc. And for the sake of ID, for ringing up and talking about accounts with places, it's easier if things match. Mostly not essential though, but can be easier.

Not that you have to tell them just because you are getting married!
