Selling unwanted gold jewellery

I’ve got some chains and earrings that I will never wear again, so thinking of selling them. What’s the best way to go about it, take it to two different jewellers and see what they offer ? Does the price change day to day ?

See Martin Lewis's advice on this via the MSE website. Sometimes posting it to be valued / sold can be best.

I’m worried about not getting it all back if I decide not to go through with it, but will look, thanks.

Absolutely do shop around and research your prices thoroughly. I sold some gold jewellery a couple of years ago and some advice was to try small independent jewellers as they can give a better price, so I tried this and despite being a well-known and respected jeweller he clearly tried to rip me off. His offer was ridiculously low and he claimed it was because it was, in his eyes, a small amount of gold. I ended up selling to Cash Converters as they offered nearly double the price plus it wasn’t much lower than some of the online ones. I did need to take photo ID too.

Is it just gold or is it stone set?

Sometimes online firms like Hatton Garden metals can get you a higher price just for gold. You can weigh it at home and can work out a price from their website. Then at least you have a figure to compare local jewellers' prices too.

If it's more than just gold, ie stone set rings or anything like a sovereign pendant or something then visit a local auction house. They will advise you if there is a premium on the item and give an honest valuation (obvs fees are charged when sold)

If you are anywhere near Nottingham, go to the Gold bank in Victoria market. They gave me the best price for my gold. Or go to a proper jeweller.

No I’m not. Theres a jeweller not far from me to try, and I’ll go into town too.

Thanks, I’ll look at that
