Does anyone remember the days of dancing around your handbag?

I am watching Top of the Pops 1977 and reminiscing.

I told dd that in those days (70s/80s) we used to put our handbags in a bag pile on the floor and all dance in a big circle around the bags. I got a strange look 😐. Does anyone else remember doing that?!

Oh yes you would strip off when you got home because your clothes stank of smoke but your hair would still reek!

🤣🤣🤣

Remember at 01.50 and everyone was desperate to snog someone during the slow dance before the lights came on?

Ah man, I loved my clubbing days 😂

😂😂 yes!

The dancing round bags was just common sense! Where else were we supposed to leave them that would be equally as safe!?

Haribosweets · 05/08/2023 21:27

Yes in the early 00s! Used to leave bags unattended and take off heels too. Remember when they used to play silly nursery rhymes to signal end of night and put the lights on! Days of taking £15 out, get drunk on £1 bottles of VK have a burger and taxi home and still have change!

But trying to find your ticket for the cloakroom was a nightmare 😵‍💫😂😂

Slow sets 😂. God yes! We had all had it drilled into us by our mammies that you couldn’t refuse a dance so had to go and endure an excruciating 3 minutes dancing with some awful boy to Lady in Red 😂😂

Still hate that song!

Listen to you lot and your fancy clubs, it was discos in those days 😆

Chowtime · 05/08/2023 21:32

Do people not go to nightclubs anymore then? I have very found memories to getting into west end nightclubs when i was 15!

Aah this put such a smile on my face 😂 I remember doing all this in clubs as an older teen in the noughties. Bags in the middle and heels off after a long night sometimes lol

PollyCreo · 05/08/2023 21:34

Oh yes and trying to convince the bouncers you were 18!

What do youngsters do these days??

Twospaniels · 05/08/2023 21:39

Yes! - an 80’s girl here.
Put shoes and handbag on the floor and dance next to them.
Reek of smoke when we got home
Could put a drink on a table, go and dance, and come back and your drink would still be there and would not have been tampered with
chips or kebab after the club
club closed at 2am and it was time to go home

Same here

Me too on both counts!

I also remember coming home stinking of fags (I didn’t smoke ) and feet filthy from dancing with no shoes on. Glass on the floor and all sorts 🤣

I'd forgotten that. Stinking of fags in your hair, even though you never smoked. Black muck on soles of feet from dancing.

Fabulous thread.

It was also the anticipation of getting into the club - it depended if the bouncer fancied you or not 😂 And god yes, the chips/kebab at 2.30 before trying to get a taxi all the while fighting off men called Jason....those were the days!

thenightsky · 05/08/2023 21:52

I'm from West Yorkshire. Do any of you on here remember Time & Place in Bradford Foster Square? Mecca in Leeds Merrion Centre? Oakwood Hall near Shipley? Tiffany's on Manningham Lane in Bradford?

CheerfulYank · 05/08/2023 21:52

I remember a comedian (American, like me) talking about this! Definitely a universal experience 🤣

LivingitLarge · 05/08/2023 21:52

I’m so glad everyone else remembers doing the same. Must have been all over the UK!

All together now..... "Shaaaaang-a-lang..." (with a skinny scarf tied around your wrist)

dearJayne · 05/08/2023 22:07

I remember doing that in 2000

ShimmyingThroughTheChaos · 05/08/2023 22:17

We were definitely still doing this in the mid-2000s. I miss those days.

Now that really is 70s Rollers.

NoCapesDarling · 05/08/2023 22:23

No dancing round the bags for me! I used to put my spacious bra to good use- purse in one side and lipstick in the other.
Unfortunately I got ID a lot and mine was a passport that didn’t fit in my bra so I kept it between my pants and my tights (not actually next to skin!)- the look on the bouncers faces when I produced it like a rabbit out of a magician’s hat 😳😂

Yes!! £15 was plenty for a night out including a 15 mile taxi ride home! I used to barter with the taxi drivers to find the best deal 😂
60p for a vodka and coke in Sheffield. I'll never get used to paying £10 for a drink when I occasionally go out now!

I'm 54 and that's what we did a clubs on the 80s

This can't be true. The 80s was only 20 years ago.
