Neighbours yappy dog in flat

I like in a development of flats and one of my neighbours on my floor has a sausage dog pup - he must be about a year old now.

He is usually pretty yappy, for example when does slam open/closed, when he’s taken for walks etc. But today my neighbours have obviously gone out and he’s been barking on and off for close to 2 hours now, it’s never been like this before! There’s another dog barking on and off in the block opposite us so I think that might be setting him off or possibly the rain?! I feel so bad for the wee guy!

I don’t know my neighbours very well but should leave a note to let them know? I don’t want them to think I’m annoyed 😬

But you are annoyed,rightly so
Hi Flat Number just to let you know your dog was unsettled and barked for 2hours on 4th August Hope everything is ok

up to you whether you sign or not. Depends if they’re reasonable or will be gripey

I agree a polite note through the door letting them know is a fair approach, they might have thought the dog would be okay alone and letting them know it wasn't will give them opportunity to sort something out (e.g., dog sitter).

If it becomes a regular occurrence then you have the option of escalating it to the noise complaint team at your local council.

I think with the explosion of dog ownership that barking dogs are just becoming common place now.

I live on a new build estate with the gardens in a courtyard style where the majority of the houses own dogs - there is never an hour that a dog isn’t barking and setting off the others and I mean from 5am in the morning. I’m resigned to it now!

My DS lives in flats and the same where he is too and as you walk along past the apartments you can always hear dogs barking from inside and on the balconies.

Definitely leave a note and as PP’s have said, escalate to the council if needed.

Keep a diary of dates, time, and duration of barking. So if you need to escalate to LA you have details
Note can be anonymous or signed Depending on how you think they’ll react

I’m moving in 3 weeks anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️

Theres a courtyard out the back of mine surrounded by blocks of flats - someone is in the habit of walking their barky wee dog through it at 7am which then results in a chorus of yaps from the other dogs 🤨

Dachshunds bark a lot, and don't like being left.
No one can stay in with their dog 24 hours.
Instead of all this cowardly note leaving, why not just speak to the owners?
And forget the Council, they won't do anything.
I suppose dogs are allowed in these flats?

Pinkitydrinkity · 05/08/2023 19:42

Just easier to leave a note rather than work out if they are in or not that’s all ☺️

I’m not annoyed, literally all I was doing today was watching tv in my pjs and if I shut the living room door then I couldn’t hear the barking. I just felt bad for the poor thing and if I was a dog owner, I would want to know if my dog was that upset at being left!

Dog doesn’t like being left Oh tiny violin. Don’t get a dog then,if it’s needy & barky. Simple as that
i wouldn’t advise leaving signed note until you know they’re reasonable. Some dog owners are pooch daft and blinkered when it comes to the dog
And the LA does have enforceable powers or the complainant can complain direct to the magistrates’ court under section 82 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

My neighbours' dachshund used to howl when they were out. For hours. I told them - they had no idea! One of them wfh so was generally around but the dog was in in sone distress. They had two but only one did it.
Now my (different) neighbours have gone away for the summer but their wretched Alexa alarm goes off in their kitchen for an hour at 3pm and I can hear it well in my adjoining kitchen!

@Furtivefig "I think with the explosion of dog ownership that barking dogs are just becoming common place now"

It's insufferable isn't it? Next door have got a dog that seems to need a shit at 4am every day and yap yap yaps at fucking everything. Can you imagine if I went out in the garden and shouted "Oi!" at the top of my voice over and over again? Plod would pay a visit in no time, but because it's a dog we have to tolerate it because well, I dunno, they're fluffy?

Does anyone own a yappy dog? What pleasure do they bring?

AnOldCynic · 05/08/2023 22:48

@mondaytosunday can't you shout through the wall "Alexa, cancel the alarm"
😂
