Traveling for the first time abroad as an adult. I'm flying. I'm very very anxious .

What are the rules for liquids in hand luggage? How do I take enough shampoo etc?

No single liquid over 100ml and all Your liquids need to fit in a clear plastic bag (can’t remember the size but it’ll be on your airport web site).

two ways to make sure you have enough shampoo: buy it at the airport once you’re through security. Buy it at your destination. I’m pretty sure there’ll be shops there.

BitOutOfPractice · 05/08/2023 11:15

Just add, there’ll be the clear plastic bags readily available at the airport. Or you can buy a more robust one on Amazon etc

LittleBearPad · 05/08/2023 11:15

I assume you’re not checking in luggage?

There’s always a Boots after security which will have shampoo if not necessarily your preferred brand

Check with your airline but I think the rules have relaxed this year.

You'll enjoy your flight when you're up in the air and will hardly feel it moving. I love take off. There is sometimes turbulence when the air temp changes but it's nothing to worry about and the pilot might tell everyone to sit down and out seat belts on.

A woman next to me in a flight told me that she was nervous and I noticed she used Bachs rescue remedy to ease her anxiety. I just talked to her and tried to change the subject.

Take something to read and some sweets to suck as some people ears pop with the cabin pressure. You'll have probably experienced this happening when you are in the car and going down a steep hill.

Where are you flying to?

Good advice so far. If you're nervous about the flight itself look up Lovefly which I've seen recommended on here. They have a website, facebook and a podcast :)

Thank you 💙 Norway, so a short flight.

I get stressed very easily. 😩

There's really nothing to be anxious about, so long as you leave plenty of time to travel to the airport, get through security and find your gate. And obviously don't forget your passport.

Anything that happens in the air will be beyond your control, so no point worrying!

Re: shampoo:

  1. Buy it in the airport after you're through security,
  2. Buy it at your destination;
  3. Take two (or more) 100ml bottles of shampoo;
  4. Use what's provided by the hotel;
  5. Check in a suitcase;
  6. Take a shampoo bar.

I was about to add solid shampoo and conditioner

Also specifically noise cancelling headphones (although most are anyway these days), put them on as soon as you are on the plan

If you are able/willing to book seats nook them on or in front of the wing

PriamFarrl · 05/08/2023 12:05

I always message the hotel and ask what toiletries are in the room. That way I usually don’t need to take shampoo and conditioner. (But I’ve got very easy hair).

You can buy zip up bags the right size in Superdrug.

You need all your liquids, and that included things like foundation, toothpaste, moisturiser and mascara, in one clear bag that does up. Nothing can be bigger than 100ml.

You will also most likely need to take out all electricals, so have iPads, e-readers, phones and power bricks all together in one easy to reach spot in your bag. I often put them all in one drawstring bag within my handbag so I can pull them all out easily.

I print off my boarding pass and any other paperwork and put it with my passport in a clear bag which I hang on my wrist. That way I can’t put it down by mistake. Once I’m on the plane I put it back in my bag, but you’ll need to get it out all the time.

If you've got luggage in the hold then put it in that. You can take full sized bottles should you wish.
If you've not got luggage in the hold then take carry on case and rucksack (check permitted size). You can go through security then shop
In Boots before you board the plane. What you purchase after security doesn't need to be 100ml it can be full sized. Same goes for snacks, sandwiches and drinks.

SM4713 · 05/08/2023 13:26

*Many airlines run them!

TheRealMeeeee · 05/08/2023 14:41

Thank you everyone. I'm self catering so I'll take a few 100 ml bottles.
