When will my breast milk go?

bapplebanana · 05/08/2023 08:25

I breast fed DS1 until he was two and then DS2 was born and I've breast fed him until he was nearly three. It's been sixth months since I stopped, and I still have breast milk. When is it likely to go altogether?

Thanks

Why comment when you have nothing to add 🙄.

I fed mine until nearly 3, I can't remember when it went actually! I had reduced right down to only a night feed so I don't think it took much.

The World Health Organisation recommends breast feeding till 2 (if you can). So not only is there absolutely nothing wrong with it, it's medically advised. Not sure what you hoped to gain with your post, but perhaps do some reading first.

WhatNoRaisins · 05/08/2023 13:27

When you've breastfed for a long time it can take much longer to stop producing milk. Think it was something like 9 months for me after about 4 1/2 years feeding two DC.

Nortam · 05/08/2023 13:28

@Takeyournegativevibesawayfromme op did not ask for your opinion.

Op, well done for feeding into toddlerhood. I breastfeed all 3 until 2/3 and currently feeding 18 month old dc4. I had a 6 year age gap between DC2 and dc3 and could still express tiny drops up until my pregnancy with dc3.

There you go this is mumsnet if one quotes you the rest attack you like a lion attacking it's prey... Funny how you all took a in a negative way when it wasn't intended... I just don't get people on mumsnet ask me before making assumptions... I clearly had something relevant to add if you all bothered to read the post

Takeyournegativevibesawayfromme · 05/08/2023 13:31

@bapplebanana please don't take my post in a negative way, I meant its hard work when they go to nursery that's all ❤️

This is a thread we can have an opinion if we want to, try sticking to the post, OP asked how long it takes to stop breastfeeding.

Who Advice is if possible to breastfeed for two years or longer. The health benefits continue .
I don't understand your comment or why you think it would be helpful.

Yonderway · 05/08/2023 13:42

I think in most cases milk will dry up within 6 months

NeverDropYourMooncup · 05/08/2023 13:42

If you're checking lots, that can keep stimulating production, as can taking some antidepressants.

If those don't apply to you, I'd say that assuming you aren't experiencing a huge letdown reflex all the time, that 9 months is a general ballpark timescale.

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 05/08/2023 13:43

I fed my last until 2.5 years. I can’t actually remember when it went. I think by the end I had very little anyway and it kind of dried up with him.

the first 2 I didn’t tandem feed but basically stopped as I started the next so it didn’t dry up in between.

Your comment is pointless and judgemental. The WHO recommends breastfeeding until at least 2 years and beyond. No wonder the breastfeeding rates in this country are so low given attitudes like this.

Let's stop quoting people to attack them or start an argument the person already explained themself

Dontstartbringingyourtoxicenergywithme · 05/08/2023 13:51

@bapplebanana Im soo sorry your thread has been attacked by some people on mumsnet trying to start a war for no reason. In regards to when the milk supply will stop depends on your body, mine stopped gradually when I stopped bf took about 2 years to fully stop, nearly 3 years on if I squeeze my breast I still get leakage lol

Babysharkdoodoodood · 05/08/2023 13:53

I was working full time and still breast fed until ds1 had just turned 2. Expressed for cm.

I handed him over to his dad and went away for a week. That stopped it 😆

BendingSpoons · 05/08/2023 13:57

Wow this is longer than I expected! I have been bf for 7.5 years (DD until 3, D.S currently 4.5 and doesn't want to stop). Looks like when he does stop, it might take another 9m or so for milk to go. Although I could never express so I guess I won't know.

caringcarer · 05/08/2023 14:17

If you only feed for a few months it goes quickly. I bf mine for almost 2 years then stopped when he went to nursery. 6 months later I still had lots of milk. Every time I had sex it leaked, actually it squirted. My niece was born and my D's just never produced any breast milk. Just none at all. She tried pumping but nothing came. She had heard me moan.my breast milk would not go so asked if my dniece could have it. I breast fed her when she was around and pumped her milk for 6 months. My DSister collected it each day as she lived close to me. After she was weaned to food I gradually cut back on how much I pumped each day until she was a year old. My milk took almost 8 months to go. I must have saved my DSister a fortune. I've always felt close to my niece but I think I would have anyway without feeding her for a year.

bapplebanana · 06/08/2023 00:34

@Takeyournegativevibesawayfromme lol I didn't intend to feed for that long but night feeds lasted two years then three years... anything for a bit of extra sleep!!

Thanks for the replies, useful to know
