It's really scared me! Woken up to a familiar period pain, my knickers felt wet. I've been to the toilet and they're covered in blood. My regular period only stopped 10 days ago.

I'm 42. Periods have always been regular as clockwork since I was 13, bang on 28 days.

Could this be something serious? Peri menopause? Do I need to see my gp?

Yes, it could be caused by many things. Peri menopause, stress, hormone imbalance, hormonal contraceptive issue amongst others, but whatever the cause any irregular bleeding should be checked by the GP. Good luck OP.

Definitely see GP, could be any number of causes - the vast vast majority of them totally innocuous- but get checked out

Longingforthesummer · 05/08/2023 07:32

Yes get it checked out. Also start a diary, I jad similar and turned out to be a cyst but pain and bleeding were always mid cycle .. my diary entries identified whdn I looked back. Let is know how you got on OP

I had exactly this, 14 days after last period, age 40, about a year before peri symptoms started. I was also worried and saw GP who was very relaxed about it. I got a referral to a gynaecologist who said your periods can change as you enter your 40s without it being anything bad. I had an ultrasound scan which was clear and it never happened again.

Definitely see your GP but both the doctors I saw were not worried - it can be just part of approaching peri.

GardeningIdiot · 05/08/2023 07:36

This was a while ago and I remember the GP only referred me as I was worried. It was a 'would you like me to refer you?' situation.

The exact same thing happens to
Me a few days ago and Im the same age. Never happens before, I think I'll see the gp if it happens again as lots of things can cause it to happen as a one off.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 05/08/2023 07:41

I had this last year at age 42; I had a period 19 days after the previous one. Mine are usually 32 days apart. It didn't happen again, I assume it was just a temporary glitch.

PretendUsername · 05/08/2023 07:48

I had this around age 33. The GP was incredibly dismissive and almost annoyed that I bothered her. "You're getting older, what do you expect". I was in my early 30s for god's sake, that's hardly old.

It turned out to be a one off thing but personally I will never go back to the GP for any period related problem because of what she said. I hope you have better doctors than me.

MotherofPearl · 05/08/2023 08:56

I had this as one of the first symptoms of perimenopause. I always had an absolutely regular 28 day cycle and then suddenly got my period about 10 days early. I was rushing through an airport to catch a flight so timing was sub-optimal to say the least.

I then discovered that periods becoming erratic and moving closer together can be a symptom of perimenopause. Hopefully it's nothing more than that OP.

TheWorldKickedBack · 05/08/2023 09:19

I had this as soon as I turned 40. Cycles had been shorter (average 26 days) since I had an ovary removed 5 years previously but I was always regular. Then I suddenly had a 13 day cycle out of the blue. It now happens roughly every 6 months or so.

Scotlander72 · 05/08/2023 09:44

Thank you all so much for the replies and reassurance. I will phone my gp on Monday, I've got some other serious health issues going on so I could do without anything else to worry about. I'd rather get it checked. Oh the joys of getting older!

That's awful. Sorry to hear you had such a bad experience.

46 here, for the first time this last month, had a period which lasted 14 days, after 10 days stopped am having second. I think is the beginning of the end for my childbearing options

Justkeepingplatesspinning · 05/08/2023 13:36

Mine have always been irregular but there's a pattern to them when you look back over a year. It's not unusual for mine to be only 19 days long, equally they can be well over 40 days.
I'd get it checked out with your doctor for peace of mind if nothing else.
