Michael Rosen & Rachel Riley

This sounds quite sensitive so apologies to anyone who's affected by it but can someone please tell me what the argument between these two is about?

Seems to be a big twitter spat about which one's antisemitic..? There's an article that apparently sheds lights but it's in Google drive which I can't access.

TIA

Rachel Riley appears devoid of analytical thinking or in depth research of her views. However her facial expressions don't help.

Rosen always comes across badly to me.

I don't know how he takes the credit for "bear hunt" when he didn't come up with it.

Exactly. He was also very nasty to the headteacher in one of his childrens schools. She spoke to him politely about walking into the classroom and going through the child’s books at morning drop off ( child was in KS2) as the teacher found it intimidating and disruptive. So what did he do? He wrote about it in his newspaper column, naming the school and saying parents should be allowed to see books at any time. He was a big buddy of a headteacher I knew well and he used to do the same in that school, including walking into the staffroom when he fancied.

He made me cry once, speaking on the radio about his sons death, but I still think he is an entitled arse.

As for Rachel Riley, she's not very bright

Fair comment, but she hadn't the wit to know that he's Jewish, even though he's very well known and has a name which couldn't be mistaken for anything other than Jewish.

Well, maybe he is, but he's not responsible for someone's suicide. Do you have any link for the article he wrote about parents looking at children's books?

No, it was about 25 years ago, so unlikely to be online. It was a regular column he wrote in the Guardian.

She knows. It's all part of the trolling - hoping to get a reaction which she then followed up by claiming she'd 'upset the antisemites'. Tbf I don't know whether she did in fact receive antisemitic abuse but that certainly wasn't the case for any comments I saw.

Ah, ok.

Ah, ok.

Actually, thinking back it is probably nearer 30 years. Blimey time flies!

People want there to be saints, Jeremy Corbyn was put on a pedestal and now that’s not sustainable people are attributing profound virtue to Michael Rosen on the basis of some wonderful writing he did which was very meaningful to some people.
Life’s not black and white though and someone can have important things to say and death or education or society but also be capable of being quite vicious at times too….

It really does! I was just wondering if there was any other context to it. But I'm sure it's possible he was just being an arse.

HeadNorth · 11/08/2023 16:55

I'd think it was a bit harsh if someone continued to judge me for unverified arsey behaviour 30 years ago. Even if he did behave exactly as recalled, I think we can allow that people can have off days and also that we can all learn and grow (including learning to drop 30 year grudges)

Sorry you don’t believe me. I can’t do anything about that. And it’s not a grudge, it’s an observation about someone who deliberately took something that was a minor issue being dealt with appropriately into a public forum where the other party was identified but had no ability to respond because unfortunately they didn’t have their own widely read column in a national newspaper to use as a personal weapon.
