Please help. Toddler DS has broken a tooth and no dentist

I’m not sure what to do. We moved recently and haven’t registered with a dentist. His front tooth has about a third of it missing with a jagged bit. What do I do?

This happened to my ds and it was fine - that said, I did get him looked at by a dentist. Eventually it fell out and his adult teeth came in just fine.

While I hope that reassures you, I do think you should try and get him checked by a dentist if possible. You'd probably have to pay but I'm sure you'd be seen as an emergency appointment.

When DD1 bashed her front tooth, I called 111 and they arranged for a dentist to call me back (who essentially said that nothing needed to be done imminently but to get it looked at by dentist in due course). Hers hadn't broken, though, just been pushed out of place slightly.

Unfortunately I wouldn't bank on being able to access an NHS dentist, you'll have to try calling up a local private dentist and ask them for advice, register with them and they'll probably be able to see you within a couple of weeks, possibly earlier if your son is in pain. It's not ideal to have to fork out for it but needs must, they'll have a payment plan system if you're struggling.

Call 111 and they should direct you to the local emergency dentist. You may have to wait until “out of hours” though.

Thank you. That is reassuring. So he just had half a tooth with no treatment needed?

Call 111 they'll help find and NHS dentist for a check. Then you can get registered locally.

Datafan55 · 04/08/2023 18:22

He'd probably need it filed down (quick and easy) (albeit by a dentist!).

I’m a paediatric dentist. Is it a baby tooth? How old is he? Do you have a picture?

Yes. It turned totally grey after a while but he wasn't in any pain. I'd say he lost less than half though- your son sounds like he's lost more than that.

He’s 2. I couldn’t get a clear pic but had a good look and it seems like less than half the tooth gone. All I can see is white on the break. A red ring on the gum around the tooth so I guess the tooth has been pushed in a little?

Thanks all. 111 reassured me that there is no action to be taken. The damage is just cosmetic. To watch out for signs of an infection but she’s likely to be absolutely fine.

OP, what happened eventually? Did the tooth turn grey?

Peskytooth · 07/07/2025 10:00

Yes it’s grey and still not fallen out. It did cause her an abcess that she had antibiotics for but is fine now.

Thanks for letting me know! Is the discolouration very visible? How quickly did it turn grey? There was a bit of bleeding around the tooth after the incident, right?

Peskytooth · 07/07/2025 16:23

I think it took a few days to turn grey. I don’t think there was lots of blood but definitely a red line around the tooth on the gum.
