My former BIL who we are all still very close to has had a heart attack aged 52.

He is probably not the healthiest specimen, but FFS

Poor poor man.

I am starting to feel my age. I am also 52.

Just makes me feel less immortal I suppose

Very common for men to have heart attacks in their 50s. Many recover to live normal lives with the help of medication.

fullbloom87 · 03/08/2023 22:14

I'm sorry to hear that OP but glad he's alive. It's awful when someone we know from our younger years suddenly faces their mortality. I suppose it happens to everyone we know at some point. My friend lost her husband earlier in the year to a heart attack and he was only 32!.
They'd only been married 3 months. So very sad.
I hope your BIL gets good treatment and enjoys the rest of his life which I'm sure he will xx

FunnysInLaJardin · 03/08/2023 22:54

Thank you both, just a bit of a shock I suppose and @fullbloom87 that is awful!

Soooo many people I went to school with have died. We all take for granted we will live until our 80s and die in our sleep (hopefully) but it's a massive reality check when people in their 40s and 50s start going. 1 in 2 gets Cancer now. It's very worrying, but all we can do is try and live life to the fullest and hope for the best!

Sandals94 · 03/08/2023 22:58

Meant to say, I hope your BIL makes a full recovery! Maybe it will give him the kick up the bum he needs to get healthy 🥰

EllaMenopee · 03/08/2023 23:43

I hope your bil is well again soon. A good friend had just had major heart surgery (including stents) at 44. He's very fit and other than a few pints a week, very careful with his diet. Entirely genetic according to his cardiologist.

BounceyB · 03/08/2023 23:46

It's sad but if it's not caused by genetics he'll be able to do something about it.

yeahscience · 03/08/2023 23:54

I had a heart attack in March, at 35 years old! A freak 90% blockage in artery, likely linked back to having Covid badly a year earlier. Hope he makes a full recovery, 5 months on I'm virtually back to normal Flowers

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 03/08/2023 23:59

My friend's DH had one two weeks ago. He's 49. It's been a shock

MaidOfSteel · 04/08/2023 00:06

My dad had a heart attack at that age, more than 20 years ago. He's still here with us. It was one hell of a shock at the time, but it brought about some major lifestyle changes and that has probably kept him alive. A heart attack is definitely something to be learned from.

Whyishewearingasombero · 04/08/2023 00:08

My DH had a heart attack at 49, causing sudden cardiac arrest. Luckily he was at a festival with a group of nurses, next to a defibrillator...7 stents later, he has made a full recovery. Nothing short of miraculous.

Good wishes to your b-I-l, OP.

Swansandcustard · 04/08/2023 00:11

Not to be eleven-o-refe but I am 55f and had a heart attack at age 51. It’s young, but according to my cardiologist not uncommon.

I hope he’s recovering well and taking advantage of all the rehab. It’s a scary thing to go through (when you look back!) but whilst extreme, forewarned is forearmed.

caringcarer · 04/08/2023 01:12

My BiL was really fit, still played football and rode his bike a lot. He had a massive heart attack at 41 and died. They tried to resuscitate him but failed. His Dad died at 56 of a heart attack. It was genetic.

My father had his first stroke in his 50s.

Sadly he didn’t take note of the pre or post warnings & has made no lifestyle changes so he’s had more & now strikes and suffers from vascular dementia. He’s convinced he’s just deaf.

He thinks he’ll have one last big stroke & die happy having had food and drink that ‘bring him joy’. Sadly being around family doesn’t give a strong enough desire to live happy instead.

Growing old can be really shitty sometimes.

blueshoes · 04/08/2023 02:45

They do say your 50s is sniper alley. If you can get through it, chances are you will live for at least another 20 years.

Bubbles254 · 04/08/2023 03:56

My grandad had 2 heart attacks in his 50s. He took early retirement and made a full recovery and lived until his 90s.
