smart meter

I was thinking of getting a smart meter. When I phoned my energy company which is E.O.N they said ok. My current meter is on the side of the property (I live in a flat in a converted house). My neighbour said she wanted a smart meter and was told she could not have one fitted where the currrent meters were located and that they would need to be moved round to the front of the house.. I presume because where they are you could not get a signal. My neighbour said no because she would have to pay

A friend of mine said she has never heard of anyone having to pay to have a meter moved. I phoned up E.O.N and queried and they said yes you do have to pay and probably £150. They now say they do not know how much I will have to pay because they do not know how far they will have to move the meter. They said if you have to have the meter moved more than onen meter from the current location then they tell the customer to pay a fee for them to move the meter. My friend has said several of her friends had the meter moved with no cost. The other thing is if I decide to pay and have a smart meter and the smart meter does not work properly then I will have wated my money asking to have the meter moved when at the end of the day the smart meter does not work

Anyone else heard of this

Is your meter outside the whole property or is it just not in your flat but inside in a communal area cupboard?

Ring them back and ask whether a signal booster would solve the problem. A 4G multiband antenna is about £25: there are all sorts of antennae and boosters to assist smart meter connectivity.

Your best bet is to ask for an install - the installer will let you know the otptions if it doesn't work. It won't cost you anything to try.
Meter moves nearly always cost money - I've never known a move being needed specifically for a Smart Meter install. They will leave the Smart Meter without communications rather than move it.
The Central and South regions can support aerials, the North cannot. Your installer will try these at the time if necessary.
