How many lessons did you have before passing your driving test?

My friend's son just passed his driving test in the US and only had about 10 lessons (plus practice in his parent's car). I passed my test in 1989 at the age of 19 having had 17 lessons (1hr each). Most teens I speak to now seem to have loads of lessons before passing their tests. Now my DS is interested in learning in a few months time, once he's 17, and I'm now idly pondering what timescale is the norm nowadays and does it differ significantly from in the past? I know there are more criteria to meet these days, but equally cars are way easier to drive (I learnt with no power steering, assisted braking, electronic handbrakes, parking sensors etc).

What year did you take your test and how many lessons did you have beforehand?

Most of it it because they are waiting for a test. The backlog is huge.

My dd was a year to the day from her first lesson

Spent ages waiting for a test and only got 2 minors which is now apparently considered a lot!

I shudder to think how much she spent on lessons

Early 1990s, I had two or three lessons, after being taught by my dad and doing a lot of practice. Passed first time.

I had a 1 hour weekly lesson for a year and a 2 hour weekly lesson for the 2 months before my test. In total it was about 70 hours of instruction before I passed.

Me (30 years ago) - I did one of those intensive courses with 4 hours of lessons every day for a week and then passed.

DS (recently) - 4 lessons plus practice with me and DH and then passed.
