I thought we’d passed Peak Gin?

I was in a swanky food hall yesterday. So many different gins. Every where, so many options, some stunning bottles. The average price was about £35-40 per 70cl.

I just don’t get it. Who is drinking it? There can’t be much brand allegiance with this many options so I don’t understand how these distilleries are keeping going.

I really like gin, I like the taste, I like tonic water. I'm in my 40s now and its one of the few things I can drink a lot of and not end up blind drunk, or have too much of a hangover in the morning.

These fancy gins are probably being bought as gifts for other gin lovers, or someone will have a browse and pick up a new one that sounds nice.

Rum will over pass Gin soon don’t worry. Seeing lots of fancy flavours rums about at shows recently.

It is cheap to make so the profit margins are high.

The rise in gin distilleries has been huge, from approx 200 in 2015 to over 800 now. As a PP said the profit margins are really high so a lot of distilleries making other spirits will also make a gin.

I like drinking gin, as does DH. Inevitably we'll be bought a bottle each for birthdays, Christmas etc. We can confidently say we'll be bought 6 bottles a year between us from various friends and family, often more. So I think a lot are bought as gifts, particularly pretty bottles.

Going out is expensive now. A gin and tonic in a bar near me will be close to £10. So a £40 bottle to drink at home is pretty good value if it's interesting and tastes nice.

A lot of it might be benefiting from 'if it's expensive it must be good' syndrome.

I'm another gin fan and it's one of my little treats. So despite the rational side of me not actually really believing that a £40 bottle is twice as good as a £20, it feels like more of a treat to buy something that says it's lovingly crafted, small batch made and comes in a pretty bottle than bottle of big name stuff that costs half that amount.

Ooh I love that Garstang gin! They do a cracking spiced pear version too.

Not the point of the thread I know 🤣
