Would you go to hospital for this?

I was skiing at an indoor skiing place yesterday and fell, twisting my knee. Very painful to walk yesterday, stairs are very uncomfortable!

I’ve had a bad night as every time I turned over I was woken up with pain. Walking this morning is hard, I can’t really weight bear on that leg. Have been taking ibruprofen and icing it.

here’s the issue - we’re away on holiday and I don’t know what the local hospital is like. We’re supposed to be going to go ape today and I have to supervise DD from the ground, but I can barely walk. If we don’t go we lose the money (I was never booked in to go ape because I hate heights).

do I
a) limp about as best as possible so as not to disappoint DC and DH or
b) find the local hospital and potentially spend all day sitting about?

can anything be done for knees anyway? Is it just a case of ‘take pain killers and wait for it to go away?’.

i have form for health anxiety and being a bit of a drama llama when it comes to injuries so I don’t know what to do! There’s no obvious swelling, pain is on the inside edge of the knee closest to my other leg, if that makes sense?

I would definitely go to a hospital or minor injuries, but the question is whether to do the activity first. Could you even supervise from the ground?

DustyLee123 · 03/08/2023 07:39

You need to go to A&E as you’ll need an X-ray. It’s up to you whether you limp round Go Ape first, or lose the money.

CurlsLDN · 03/08/2023 07:43

If DH is going to go ape with DC, why do you need to go? They can drop you off to minor injuries or A&E then continue on to go ape, you get a taxi back to your accommodation and rest after you’ve been seen.

sounds like you’re in the uk? Where abouts? I’m sure someone here will be familiar with local medical centres.

Phone 111 and they can advise on local minor injuries unit

devildeepbluesea · 03/08/2023 07:47

Why can’t you go to minor injuries or A&E by yourself?

FrenchFancie · 03/08/2023 07:48

We’ve got a holiday cottage in North Yorkshire - near Malton. I think York might be closest hospital?

DH and oldest DD are doing one course, youngest DD is booked at the same time onto a lower course as she’s too young. I guess DH could lose his booking and supervise youngest DD while older one goes nuts on the longer course?

MIU or A&E is appropriate

Nix32 · 03/08/2023 07:51

There's definitely a hospital in Malton and I think they have a minor injuries unit, so I would try there first.

Thank you for this - I will Google and find out where it is!

Having said that - they're likely to tell you to rest it. I'd hobble through Go Ape and then try to rest.

WeAreTheHeroes · 03/08/2023 07:55

If it's so bad the pain on moving whilst asleep has woken you I would definitely get it checked, but call 111 for starters and take it from there. Your husband can supervise your youngest if needs be.

Sirzy · 03/08/2023 08:01

Can your DH and eldest not go to go ape and you and the youngest have a quiet day chilling in the accommodation then see how it goes after a good rest?

Etherealcelestialbeing · 03/08/2023 08:01

I would call 111 to see where to go. Malton hospital is tiny. We holiday there a lot and Last time DD needed an X-ray they sent us to Scarborough hospital.

I think you should get it checked so you know how to treat it properly.

ifonly4 · 03/08/2023 08:02

Unless there's an obvious problem, ie something definitely broken, might need an op, I'm not one for rushing to hospital, so I'd stick it out for a day or so.

Might be worth trying some over the counter co-codamol (as that works better and may help you relax) and alternating it with ibuprofen and some sort of knee support, if only a fabric one.

I'd try and do as little as possible to today. Totally understand you want to be with your family, so maybe go out with them but have a food/drink treat sit at the outdoor cafe there, take a book, puzzle, mess around on your mobile while they do activity.

Re: activity, if oldest is the right age to do all the safety checks and is happy to do it on their own, I'd go down that route. If that doesn't work, no matter what it says on the booking, might be worth checking if you can delay one of the activities to another time slot.

scrimpton · 03/08/2023 08:03

From what you've described, it sounds like you've injured the medial collateral ligament, which thankfully receives blood flow and can repair itself. I would suggest applying RICE (rest, ice, compress, elevate) and contacting your GP for a hospital referral for a stability test and possibly MRI scan!

Twyford · 03/08/2023 08:17

If stairs are simply "uncomfortable" it doesn't sound too bad. Only you can really judge, though.

Malton has a minor injuries for walk ins between 9am-8pm. Always best to get checked out. Its probably a sprain which can be really painful but go get seen. I tore my ACL skiing.

Ps if its dalby forest go ape it's fab your dd will love it!

So you’re still in the UK? Then get to the hospital, for heaven’s sake. You will need an X-ray. It may be ligament or other soft tissue, but you need to rule it out.

I thought when you said you didn’t know what the local hospital was like you meant you were abroad and could be subject to big costs or shonky care!

sundayneptune · 03/08/2023 22:02

How did you get on op?

WunWun · 03/08/2023 22:05

I would probably limp at go ape then go to the hospital unless I was in agony. I'd take a load of ibuprofen.

Definitely go to the hospital though! Because of potential torn ligaments. I'm surprised people are saying the hospital won't do anything or to just rest it!

WunWun · 03/08/2023 22:06

Ah, sorry. I've just read it's from this morning.

Hope whatever you did went okay
