Where would you recommend for a 4-night-ish stay in October? Me, DH and DS14. No specific interests to cater to, but nice food, and interesting streets to wander around would be perfect. I'm wondering about Rome, Berlin, or Lisbon but would love anyone's ideas!

I'd go somewhere still warm - Porto, Faro or Palma Mallorca for Pinchos, tapas and Huevos Rotos - great for wondering and you can also get the wooden train/tram over to Soller/Port de Soller for one day.
We went to Amsterdam in October and found it still rammed with tourists and the weather wasn't great and i found it all a bit meh. I couldn't get that excited about Copenhagen either even though we went at Christmas. Bruges doesn't need more than one day IMO. Rome has more big sights than anywhere else and is amazing in that respect - but I'd want to add on somewhere a bit more relaxing afterwards as it's so full on and watch out for pickpockets. Prague is lovely although I haven't been for years and I have a soft spot for Budapest (well the baths mainly!).

Defintely either Barcelona or Rome as both have fantastic amounts of things to do. The open top bus tour in Barcelona takes you to all the main sites to get on and off and its all really walkable, great shops and food if you venture away from the Ramblas. The covered food market is wonderful!!

The open top bus tour in Rome isn't great as it can't get too near a lot of things. My mum and i went on a fantastic Vespa & side car tour which was honestly brilliant!! If you have the spare cash, i really recommend it as a fun and different way to see absolutely everything with a running commentary in your earpiece. https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/AttractionProductReview-g187791-d15000791-Vespa_Sidecar_Tour_in_Rome_with_Cappuccino-Rome_Lazio.html

We also went on a walking Food tour which was brilliant also. One of the best bits was meeting other people and discussing the food with them, from America and Israel and Germany.

Split. It's a lovely city, very friendly, very safe, lovely walks and boat trips to the islands, great shopping, spectacularly good wines. Took DD there for a week last year and we both really loved it. So much that she had a minibreak there this year on her own.

Budapest.

HappyHolidai · 03/08/2023 20:50

Nice. Montpellier. Really anywhere in the south of France!

IsItThough · 03/08/2023 21:03

Lisbon - still warm, loads to do.
We are currently weighing up Barcelona or Malaga for same.

I'd do Amsterdam (and Rotterdam/Utrecht) in the spring.

Budapest. Dd particularly liked the torture museum Confused

These replies are all so helpful, thank you! I've had Rome in my mind for a while - DS has never been and I think he would love it. DH and I haven't been since our honeymoon 17 years ago. But I was keen to look at other possibilities and there are some brilliant ones here.

I've visited Rome, Barcelona, Nice recently and all were good but the top of my list would be Krakow. We loved it and a few years back got such good value for money which was a refreshing treat!

BrokenMantra · 03/08/2023 21:33

We did the Rausch chocolate house as recommended by MIL (and it was a treat), but also found that McDonalds did quite amazing chocolate cake. Who knew.

Budapest! Amazing city. So beautiful. Loads to do and see - there's the secret cave hospital from WW2, the arty graffitied ruin bars, the House Of Terror Nazi- base now a museum (grim but fascinating), gorgeous hot spring spas inside and out, boat rides on the Danube, walks up beautiful Fishermans Bastion, the chain railway and hill railway operated by children up into the mountains, then get the ski lift back down, streets lined with decorative cafes with beautiful cakes.
