Skoda fabia or Kia Picanto?

strawberryjeans · 02/08/2023 20:08

Both 2019 and 2020
Both 5 door

Kia has warranty for another few years and is 10k miles

Not sure what the warranty is on the Skoda but it has 15k miles

Will be mainly used for popping to the shops and driving to the office, not a long commute. Hoping to start a family too quite soon

I do prefer little cars, cheaper to run.

Also, I’d be able to purchase the Kia outright but would have a small payment of probably 100-150 a month ish for a few years on the Skoda

I had a Fabia and it was brilliant.

CopperSeahorses · 02/08/2023 20:15

My Fabia was brilliant, we had it for many years and two kids learned to drive in it, it never put a foot (or wheel) wrong. It had well over 180k on the clock when we traded it in.

Having driven both, the Fabia every time. It feels much more like a ‘proper’ car, ingérable more comfortable & more refined than the Picanto which feels tiny, unrefined & cheap in comparison.

isitaline97 · 02/08/2023 20:17

I'd be tempted by the Fabia is planning on starting a family as it will give you a little more space than the picanto, especially in the boot for a pram etc. unless there's another car in the household that will be used more as a family car?

isitaline97 · 02/08/2023 20:17

If*

BarelyLiterate · 02/08/2023 20:18

No idea what autocorrect was thinking of then, but the word I was trying to type was ‘bigger’.

Yes we’ve a bigger car as well, but this is a good point.

I think id prefer the fabia for reasons above (more space) but, not having a monthly payment & the 4 year warranty… I’m not sure if that’s worth it purely for the peace of mind while income is reduced in any future maternity leave & the years of childcare fees…

My mum has had a Fabia from new, still going very well after over 10 years. Plenty of space for her stuff too and she does cart around a lot of things!

DrLucyVanPelt · 02/08/2023 20:33

We have a 2013 Fabia estate bought from new and mainly used for short trips. It's been amazingly reliable and still going strong, would definitely recommend!

AnneOfCleavage · 02/08/2023 20:43

I have a Kia Picanto (which I've had from brand new) for 14 years. It's 4 door and my DD was 4 when I bought it. I can hand on heart say it's the most fab car I've ever owned and I would buy another one in a heartbeat. My DH has the bigger family car so this is used for town run around, to and from work and was fab when I took my DD out when young. She's now learning to drive and drives it and loves it too. I can't rate it enough and not much has gone wrong apart from normal wear and tear. Her friend has passed and has a Skoda Fabia and has had no end of issues. It always seems to be in the garage for something.

Seems I'm the only voice for the Kia on this thread though.

I have a Kia picanto and have had no problems at all with it. Lovely to drive, park and I love it! Would deffo have another! Only thing I would say is the boot isn't massive but plenty of room inside the car 🚗

Thank you for this! How did you fare for car seat and pushchair?

Op, can i ask how much both cars are? We are needing a car but as we haven't bought one for years i have no idea what they cost now. My budget is 7.5k, I'm guessing they are a lot more?

AnneOfCleavage · 02/08/2023 20:51

@strawberryjeans DD was 4 when I got it so had a forward facing back seat car seat which was fine. The boot isn't massive - fits c5/6 supermarket shopping bags side by side. I could easily sling DD's pushchair in the boot though but definitely not a silver cross type Pram haha. The seats fold down though so could fit a bigger pram in that way and child in the front.

followingthebreath · 02/08/2023 20:52

I've had both, Fabia much better!

AnneOfCleavage · 02/08/2023 20:55

Ps it's the perfect size when needing to park and the insurance is reasonable. DH chooses to drive it when needing to park in town as so much easier to park. The Fabia is longer and wider judging by the car DD's friend drives.

Hyundai i10. Fab car!

strawberryjeans · 03/08/2023 08:29

Going to look at both today.
Does anyone know how they measure up safety wise?

Igmum · 03/08/2023 08:55

I'd recommend the Fabia too. I had my last one for 17 years from new and it did about 138,000 miles (diesel). My new one is also a Fabia (newly second hand) and is great so far.

TakenRoot · 03/08/2023 09:01

If it was your only car I would say Skoda without a doubt.

But if you have a car that will easily take a buggy etc in addition to bags for a holiday, then the finances make the Kia the better choice atm.

As long as you have a partner who views both cars as shared cars and isn’t one of those men who must always take the Big Car to work even though you have 3 kids and an IKEA wardrobe to transport.

CopperSeahorses · 03/08/2023 09:55

The Fabia has an ncap of 5, the Picanto is a 3.

I have the Kia and can fit the bugaboo bee pram in the boot but not much else. It’s been fine for us as I use it for smaller trips and we have a larger car for long distance trips, holidays etc. I currently have two car seats in the back so I use the middle seat for keeping the changing bag/shopping bags as there isn’t enough space for an average size person to fit in the middle.
