Heads up - Ryanair seatbelts vary from plane to plane!!

I flew with Ryanair in March and needed a seatbelt extender as it was an inch or two short. I've not had an issue before on other airlines and my size hasn't changed so I was a bit surprised but it wasn't an issue. On the return flight, I just asked for an extender as we boarded.
I flew with Ryanair last week, and again needed an extender but on the flight back the seatbelt fitted and I didn't need one - very strange!

I think the size of everything varies slightly from model of plane to plane...

They aren't all going to be exactly the same.

EspanolSiesta · 02/08/2023 17:28

Not by about 6 inches!!! Seatbelt length is usually pretty much the same with the same airline.

I find Ryanair a bit tight and have needed an extension before, yet other airlines like Jet2 have more generous seatbelts and are more comfortable.

Okaaay.

Not sure what you're looking for from this thread.

Did you have a middle seat when the belt fitted? The seats are a bit wider than aisle or window.

Seatbelts can wear/break and be replaced - hence the varied length. I would expect that with any airline.

Another reason not to travel with Ryanair assuming you are a size OP that is commonplace.

Really? I never understand the Ryanair hatred on here. They’ve always flown me where I need to go at a good price as I only travel with hand luggage and without paying for seat reservation.
It’s just a flying bus

EspanolSiesta · 02/08/2023 18:13

I'm very happy to fly with Ryanair if the price and flight times suit. I doesn't bother me asking for an extender if I need one, I was just surprised at the difference between two flights.
I only posted to give people a heads up as there are often people worried about seat belts not fitting.

No, I had the same aisle seat on both flights 31C

I had that issue once, but not on the return flight and on no other airlines (I'm not that big!)

Hoppinggreen · 02/08/2023 18:22

I flew with Ryanair last week, middle seat near the back.
I am a size 16 so a bit fat but I have never had an issue with a seatbelt on any airline before. I could fasten it but it was almost at maximum.
The flight home was fine though so it must vary

ThePurpleOctopus · 02/08/2023 18:28

Didn't someone say on another of these threads that the seatbelt fabrics wears over time, and that when airlines repair/maintain the seatbelts they shorten them slightly?

(As in, the end of the fabric might need cutting off each time, so they gradually get a little shorter)

TropicalTrama · 02/08/2023 18:33

What it the same aircraft on both flights? It strikes me as more of an aircraft than airline issue so you could easily have the same issue with any airline if you flew out on a different aircraft to the one you came back on. Also seats themselves can vary: Bulkheads are narrower because the tray is the arm rests; middle seats can be wider than aisles or windows.

EspanolSiesta · 02/08/2023 19:58

Same size plane but one may have been newer than the other.
I was in the same seat for both flights.

I think this is a thing with several airlines, the older planes can have shorter seatbelts.

We went on EasyJet earlier this summer. On the way out the seatbelt did up but only just. it was an emergency seat so I was very panicky about the journey back in case i ate too much on holiday and we all had to move seats as you can’t have a seatbelt extender in emergency exit seats. On the way back though it was a newer plane and there were several inches of spare seatbelt. Phew!
