Adult scooter?

Aparecium · 02/08/2023 07:45

I'm late 50s, overweight and unfit, and have mild chronic fatigue.

My commute is 3 miles. Too far for me to walk, but too short to be good for the car (and environment) in the long run. There is a bus, but it's half a mile walk at each end and takes as long as walking the whole way. Cycling is not an option at the moment.

Would it be crazy to buy an adult scooter for the commute? Not an electric one, a push-along one. It would give me some exercise and work my core while being less tiring than walking or cycling, reduce car use, and be faster than walking or bus.

Not ridiculous. I had an electric one. Yeah I rode an electric scooter to work and back.

It took me about 20 mins to get there. I would charge it at work, and then come home on it.

A push scooter would be a good idea too. I’ve had one of those that I used to go to town with.

That sounds like a great idea. You could go for a compact one, there are loads on the market. But if you want something with pneumatic tyres and have the budget try a Swifty (my son has one)

£2000 for a scooter! 😵

I got one from decathlon a couple of years ago. I love it. Much cheaper than those shown here. It folds down and back up easily too.

How much were you looking to spend? I spent less than £600 on mine.

Aparecium · 03/08/2023 14:38

The one Soubriquet linked is more what I had in mind: larger wheels than a micro and with suspension. Folding not essential. Budget <£100.

I don't understand why so many e-scooters are being used . They're only legal on private land.

Pisses me right off.

EnthENd · 03/08/2023 17:28

3 miles is a bit far on a kick scooter. The half mile to the bus stop though is a good kick scooter distance, and when considering similar quality a scooter is usually cheaper than a folding bike. Then again Decathlon sell a basic folding bike for 220 quid.

3 miles on a scooter is a bloody long way!

I think as a PP said I’d do scooter, bus, scooter.

You want a decent one, micro scooter do good adult ones with suspension for less than £200

Pisses me off too. They have no insurance, no safety helmets required, they don't pay tax etc

Kpo58 · 03/08/2023 18:18

Globber do some nice adult sized scooters. They do 2 and 3 wheel versions.

GalileoHumpkins · 03/08/2023 18:56

Are you thinking about riding it on the road or the pavement?

Aparecium · 04/08/2023 12:33

Pavement, for sure. Most of the route is wide pavements in residential streets. Happy to walk it in narrower sections if there are pedestrians.

I probably wouldn't scoot-bus-scoot. I'd have to faff about folding it and then holding it on the bus. Did that enough with buggies! Anyway, I don't want to use the bus at all, if I can help it: it takes a roundabout route, including a section which gets very sticky at rush hour, and will be rammed with schoolkids on the way there.

Hey @Aparecium did you buy one?

I am soon to have a new commute (train then 2 miles) and am debating between scooter and folding bike.

I brought one. It was about 70 pound. I do not find the wheels comfortable, Hard and plastic. My recommendation would be to get one with inflatable wheels like a 1980s / 1990s scoot X

talknomore · 11/10/2023 11:20

Are you walking comfortably those 0.5 miles each way? Is it possible to walk an extra bus stop to increase your exercise? That is if exercise is your prime motivation
I used to be morbidly obese and 7k steps/day used to kill me. It took me quite long time to build up my stamina. But it does get better. I used to be very impatient how slow was my progress! I signed up for a charity marathon overnight walk and then the actual progress sped up. I had to find time to follow a training plan for 12 weeks. I know this wasn't your question... 😊

Aparecium · 11/10/2023 12:38

I'm not really in a position to add more exercise ATM. When I'm not doing 10k steps every day at work I can easily do a half-mile walk twice a day, but together it's just too much. So the scooter is now in my Christmas list. Dh usually buys me a fancier version of whatever I would have chosen for myself 😄

I really dislike the bus journey. If I cannot manage scooting the whole way, Ill do something similar to what you suggest, but with scooter and car: drive part way and scoot the rest. Hopefully increasing the scooting as my fitness improves.

I bought myself an adult Micro scooter so I could keep up with the DC. I don't use it as much now they've outgrown their scooters but it is quite fun. One thing I'd say is that it really taxes the standing leg as it's like doing repeated lunges. I have to swap legs every 200m or so to give that leg a rest!

cherrybabie16 · 03/11/2024 04:32

I need exactly the same as you 4 miles to work just want a normal not electric scooter.

ClytemnestraWasMisunderstood · 03/11/2024 06:55

Adult and scooter is an oxymoron!

If driving the whole 3 miles is too short to be good for the car surely driving part way then scooting is not going to be good for the car? Why is cycling not an option? Is that due to fitness?
