If you have a child through ivf is there any mention of it on the child's birth certificate or hospital/medical records?

I'm 8 months pregnant through ivf and was just curious about this? Is it something you need to bring up whenever they are unwell and need to go to the doctors etc?

I have two IVF kids and no, I don’t think it’s on their records, and hasn’t been relevant for anything at all yet

Not on the birth certificate when my DC were born 13 & 11 years ago.
When seeing a consultant about anything - even now - they will ask about the DC's medical history including conception, pregnancy & birth.

Same - every single time they ask me if my pregnancy was normal/delivery was ok. This is often in front of her.

A 2019 IVF baby here - no mention on the birth certificate and never been any mention at routine GP appointments

Saschka · 01/08/2023 20:08

Isn’t on the birth certificate. It should be on your obstetric notes, and as a result on your DC’s medical record. But nobody is going to look back at them unless you make a point of showing them.

It might be nice though? I had a very high risk pregnancy with DS6, on the back of multiple miscarriages, and all of that had become part of his birth story. How he was lying the wrong way round and kicking me in my liver (vasa praevia, unstable oblique lie), how the doctors were worried (abruption, premature labour) but he hung in there to 36 weeks, how he came early but was a tough little baby and wanted to stay with mummy and daddy instead of going to NICU (low blood sugars, feeding problems, in post-natal for almost a week while finger-feeding was established).

DS loves to sit on my lap, see the photos of him as a baby, and hear the stories. A Obviously it is sanitised a little, but he loves to hear the epic of how he was born. I’m sure you can make an IVF story which your DC would love to hear about.

MuchTooTired · 01/08/2023 20:11

It’s not on their birth certificates, but it is on all our medical records I believe because they got normal illnesses as babies and I was asked about conception/delivery/bf etc and I’ve twins.

transparentday · 01/08/2023 20:24

I dont think I've ever been asked about my IVF child's conception since he was born 9 years ago. I never bring it up because it doesnt seem relevant. The community paediatrician asked about his birth though, that's something they seem more interested in.

TinyBearCub · 01/08/2023 20:31

I've never been asked about either DD's (5yo and 7 months) conception after their births. Always asked about delivery, but never conception and the baby has been in hospital a few times.

ZickZack · 01/08/2023 20:36

2020 icsi baby, nothing on their documents. Just on my medical ones

ClinkyWotsit · 01/08/2023 20:47

2020 IVF baby, never been asked about her method of conception or ,come to think of it, delivery at any GP, allergist or HV appointments, we’ve only been to urgent care for a split eye and a bad case of croup and it didn’t come up there either. Or at her routine cardio appointments as she has a congenital valve defect. To be honest, I’m not even sure the midwives & consultant brought it up again after adding it to my notes.

OuiLaLa · 01/08/2023 21:00

Two IVF babies here. Might be on their medical records, I remember mentioning it during my midwife appts/scans etc but not for the birth certificate!

you might find you tell everyone about it like I do op 😆

reluctantbrit · 01/08/2023 21:14

No IVF baby but we were asked a couple of times how DD was conceived. Gastro consultant for chronic constipation, assessment for ADHD when she was 7 and now ASD assessment (she was 15 then).

Never for anything "normal".

MaybeBabyTwo · 01/08/2023 21:16

I had a poorly child (nicu, paeds admissions xloads) and it was discussed at every single one of those for about the first 18months, when they constantly ask about pregnancy and birth etc, and then it was like it fell off the radar of important questions and I've never been asked again! It is definitely in her NICU and Paeds medical notes but I wasn't planning on keeping it a secret from her anyway so no bother.

Sunshineclouds11 · 01/08/2023 21:19

I only bring it up to professionals when asked about delivery etc.

Sunshineclouds11 · 01/08/2023 21:22

Also forgot to say, massive congratulations!

Toddlerteaplease · 01/08/2023 21:22

Paediatric nurse; It might get occasionally mentioned in clinic letters or as part of a medical history. But that's about it. Unless the parents mention it we usually don't know.

Toddlerteaplease · 01/08/2023 21:22

It makes absolutely no difference once they are born!

RuthW · 01/08/2023 21:43

It goes on the mother's gp records not the childs.

QuiltedHippo · 01/08/2023 21:48

2021 ivf baby, it's probably on some records but we have never been asked and they have significant medical involvement for various issues.

nobodygoesdowninthejungle · 01/08/2023 23:40

It's been interesting reading these replies as, for example, when DD was seeing a knee specialist having fallen and twisted her knee aged 11, I did wonder what relevance the nature of her conception, my pregnancy and delivery had!

LaMaG · 01/08/2023 23:58

Are you guys going to tell your children how they were conceived?

Daffodilsandbees · 02/08/2023 09:51

Yes I think so, when age appropriate. I think it can be told as a really positive story; how much they were wanted and how amazing science is. My eldest is 3 so I sincerely hope we have a while before the birds & bees conversations!

MaybeBabyTwo · 03/08/2023 11:47

Yes of course, my nearly 3yo already knows a fair amount about how doctors helped her to be born etc. I can't imagine ever hiding it from her.

Jeannieofthelamp · 03/08/2023 11:56

It's in my child's record as she needed treatment as a baby and they asked and recorded information about conception, pregnancy and birth. No big deal for me, I'm happy to talk to her about it.
