Best posh/fancy foods?

AMessageToYouRuby · 01/08/2023 17:55

Got a ‘foodie’ relative staying from US so went to Fortnums and the foodhalls of Knightsbridge at the weekend. Some things (£8 radicchio!) are an absolute rip off but got me thinking, what are the best fancy foods?

My choices so far but feel free to disagree:

Torres Truffle Crisps
Nocellara Olives
Laurent Perrier everything
M&S chocolate Biscuits almost definitely non-U but have to be included off the strength of their own merits

Before the pitchforks appear; I know, COL, and mn ‘naice’ snobbery, and I like Netto 7p beans on white sliced with plastic cheese as much as or probably even more than most people and it is a perfectly good dinner anyone should be grateful for. However, some things really are just worth the indulgence.

All of these wonderlicious suggestions. I’m really hungry now

declutteringmymind · 01/08/2023 19:46

I'd go the other way too.

Good old fashioned fish and chips, scotch eggs, cucumber sandwiches etc.

SM4713 · 01/08/2023 19:49

My American friend always loves going to the Twinings shop in London

For those that eat candied jalepenos- how do you eat them and with what? I have them growing in a garden and came across a recipe- but not sure if they'd go with a cheese/meat platter or something else?

I've always wanted to try snail caviar, having a seen a TV programme about it

We treated ourselves to the beef wellington from fortnums at the end of last year, it was worth every penny. Honestly one of the best things I've ever eaten. I also love Grom gelato.

They almost always have the take home wellingtons reduced to half price at the end of the day; I often pop into Fortnums when I've had meetings behind Piccadilly and they're always there. I'm quite tempted now!

Good quality meat and fish. Free range and organic. Simply prepared because the product is of a quality that can stand alone and doesn't need extra 'help' to taste good.

That's what says grand to me.

I was going to post the same thing.

wednesdayrobyn · 01/08/2023 19:52

@AMessageToYouRuby It was a take home and cook yourself one. I'm trying to think of a reason to justify buying it again.

Findlaters Chicken Liver paté from Waitrosr is sublime

Surely the only reason you need is that the shop is open and you're inside?

Good cheeses, as she possibly won't be able to get them at home.

Comedycook · 01/08/2023 20:00

Oooooo my kind of thread...

I love macarons....always feel fancy to me but I buy them in Aldi and they're quite reasonable.

Parma ham and mortadella....from an Italian deli.

Clotted cream...just give me a spoon

heldinadream · 01/08/2023 20:01

Ok so I've just put a £4 packet of crisps in my Ocado shop - and that was on special offer.
I dare not read the rest of this thread! (Not placemarking to read later, oooo no.)

Potted shrimps from Waitrose with lovely bread

AMessageToYouRuby · 01/08/2023 20:56

@wednesdayrobyn Wellington is going on my list for the cash crippling Fortnums birthday shop I'm now planning, although I'll take @LBOCS2 advice and go end of day.

@BrookNoRivals What an apt suggestion, we are taking barefoot cuntessa to Southwold next week and I've been banging on about how much she will love Black Dog Deli and the Pennybun collection, turns out both are stockists!

This thread has been financially dangerous. My fist is going to be tighter than my arsehole come September!

I so want to be the person who makes those butters.

I know myself well enough to realise I never will be.

I accidentally make it pretty much every time I whip cream because I lose focus and over whip it. Might as well carry on, at that point!😂

If you've got an electric hand whisk you literally just stand there for 2 minutes and voila! If it required effort it would not happen here.

AMessageToYouRuby · 01/08/2023 18:45

@StaunchMomma Cousin is that you?! No mayo sandwiches from this one, she's already on the homemade butter, I have heard at length how it's apparently very simple (and I'll admit I'm slightly intrigued). Although I was very close to calling her the Barefoot Cuntessa when she turned her nose up at the extortionate block of Lurpak I shelled out for this morning.

I will look into churning my own.

Nobody in their right mind sneers at Lurpak!

Does she know you had to re-mortgage for that?!!

Don't churn, babes. Just whisk to the point of oblivion 😂

GettingStuffed · 01/08/2023 21:04

Rich's cider and a good farmhouse cheddar, preferably cave aged

BMrs · 01/08/2023 21:14

Ooh I'm following just to scope out some goodies for Christmas time 😂

HundredMilesAnHour · 01/08/2023 21:17

If you're going to Southwold @AMessageToYouRuby make a little detour via Orford on the way and get some Eccles cakes from Pump Street Bakery. Best Eccles cakes in the history of the universe (and as a proud Lancastrian, I can assure you that I know my Eccles cakes). Top tip - they freeze very well so buy as many as you can fit in your car. 😛

Re Fortnums tea, I treated myself to a pack of their Earl Grey teabags. Hadn't bought them for years and I was disappointed to find them pretty flavourless. I'm sticking with Twinings in the future.

ODFOx · 01/08/2023 21:22

Betty's curd tarts

ManAboutTown · 01/08/2023 21:23

Fortnum & Mason Royal Blend Tea

Always drink expensive draught lager in a pub - something like Estrella or Camden Hells

If I'm in a nice restaurant and scallops are a starter I have them as a starter even though they are usually far from the the cheapest option

newnamethanks · 01/08/2023 21:29

Someone mentioned gelato upthread. Crosta e Mollica make gelato bombes, tartuffi. Pistachio and almond, hazelnut and chocolate, cafe au lait. Waitrose. Wonderful flavours and texture, no comparison with UK brands.

Peakypolly · 01/08/2023 21:31

For those that eat candied jalepenos- how do you eat them and with what?
Basically everything.
I eat them with cheese, particularly good with goats cheese. They liven up any cheese canapé you might make.
I put a tablespoon over chilli, on top of the sour cream. They are lovely just scooped up on a nacho. In a hot dog or burger.
My personal little recipe is sourdough toast, avocado, crispy bacon and a topping of sweetcorn mixed with candied jalapeños.
DD tops a doughnut with them and bacon bits though, mouth-wateringly delicious.
