York ideas and tips

Im heading to York in late August with two teenagers. Anyone got any ideas as to what I could do with them? I know about the main tourist spots … dungeon, ghost tours, Jorvik, castle etc . Wondering if there’s anything else of interest?

they like discovering new bakeries and ice cream places (thanks Instagram) so if you know any cool places, that would be helpful too. Thanks in advance .

This is a great thread! I'm also planning a little trip to show my teenage son where I was born.

The main thing on my list was the Terry's factory as that was where everyone from my estate went to work. Is it just "the chocolate factory" now?

It's mainly housing now and a residential home

https://m.facebook.com/dianas.cafe.york - liquid nitrogen ice cream.

We also did one of those walking treasure hunt things.

You can do axe-throwing on Goodramgate.
There’s a bubble tea place, a Wagamama, a really good comic shop called Travelling Man and a cat cafe down the same street. It’s a good street for teens.

two hoots ice cream boat, and there’s another one I can’t remember the name of down by same judy dench walk

The minster is v expensive for non residents, so if the kids aren’t keen Id swerve it

I recommend Dyls on the river for nice instagrammable lunch / drinks, followed by a circular walk on the river if the weather is nice or drift inn if you want good coffee

you can hire little boats you can steer up the river for 30-60 mins which is quite fun

You've reminded me that last summer I told the DC that this summer we'd get one of the boats you drive yourself.

This is a good thread.

My daughter went with her dad quite recently. I just asked her what she most enjoyed and she said "the Christmas market", so that's not much good now, but for anyone going later in the year?

I know they went on a ghost walk that was so awful they walked out away from it after about 10 minutes.....

In general they did have a great time tho. I haven't been myself for maybe 10 years, but remember enjoying the York Museum and the Shambles, but finding the Jorvik museum a bit dated and clunky even then, and the Cathedral appalingly over priced for entry.....

We have done three spooky style walks in York - all of them were excellent...these ones (all should be done in the dark really)

Mad Alice's The Bloody Tour of York
Shadows of York

The final one was a private ghost tour with a woman and I cannot find who it was but it ended up not being any more expensive for us each than the other tours as there were 8 of us. She was great and her tour was quite different from the others.

My teens also loved the chocolate tour and just ambling around York itself - mooching round the shops and markets. It has a fab skateboard shop if they are into that too.

I havn't been to Jorvik since it was flooded and refurbished in the mid-late 2010s, but the general consensus amongst my friends seems to be that it's not as good as it was. That could of course also be because our dc are now older (early teens).

There’s a cat cafe in the centre if they want to do something a bit out there

The cafe and gardens in the merchants hall is v nice if you want to
mix old stuff and coffee (plus it’s opposite the primark..)

Theres also spark which is a shopping container cafe / food / shop type place. Brew and Brownie always gets loads of reviews and queues. Plush is insta worthy (rainbow bagels) but dh and ds said it was a bit meh. There’s loads of smaller independent shops compared tp other cities. If you’re doing the shambles go early as it’s insane later - also plan your routes later in the day through town as parts of it can get quite lairy with stag and hen parties

Oh my goodness - this is amazing!!! Thank you so so much for all of the ideas!

Bishopthorpe Road is a lovely part of town with Flori bakery, Trinacrea for Gelato and some lovely coffee shops and brunch places, like Robinsons. You can walk there in ten mins from the town centre,
