Child tax query

Workingoutlife · 01/08/2023 15:12

I’ll call Child tax credit when I have a minute but I’m also aware you guys are often more useful than the helplines themselves!

we are on legacy benefits and receive child tax credit for children, one of whom is 18.5 and about to start a HND. Am I correct that CTC will stop and he will need to claim something in his own right ( he currently receives PIP and can’t maintain employment however tries persistently :) ) and we cannot afford the drop in income without some replacement support unfortunately

Online suggests TC and child benefit continue whilst in education but surely not at this point?

thanks

It carries on if they’re in further education until they turn 20 but a HND counts as higher I think.

does the college/uni have a student services that can advise on funding etc

I’m not sure actually re the college will try them tomorrow before calling the TC helpline

I think it stops if in higher education but I'm happy to be wrong. CB for my eldest is topping September as he's going to uni but they sent a letter. Maybe they'll write and inform you?

Student loan for HND

Rockschooldropout · 01/08/2023 18:42

It carries on until 19 if in NON advanced education. An HND is considered advanced so he would need to apply for student finance

homeforme · 01/08/2023 18:44

HND is higher education you don't get benefits for them.

Thanks guys - we have applied for a student loan for the course but didn’t apply for maintenance loan as he will continue to live at home and his costs won’t increase ( he covers his travel, expenses etc from his PIP) - but I hadn’t factored in the loss of the benefits we get to support him which we obv still will be.

will chat with the helplines and job centre tomorrow and see what’s the best way forward for him -
