I’ve got a small amount of money (1k) and I’d really like to start a little business. Always been a bit arty and fancy designing ‘toy’ T shirts for children ( they have a small rubber toy attached). Any advice to encourage (or discourage!) appreciated 🙂

The first thing to do is find out the legal aspects of producing children's clothing items and toys. Particularly in UKCA testing

Interesting I haven't found this information on the internet yet thank you for your quick reply I think you have helped me a lot.

Why would you want a toy attached to a tshirt? I think this really goes against parents' wishes to be environmentally friendly. It might also also be dangerous (strangulation hazzard) how will it be attached? How would you wash a tshirt which has a toy attached to it? What sort of toy? That's a very niche market because it would only appeal to a certain age of child.

Nope I just don't see any plus points .

Business plan?
Marketing? Competition? Break even point?

Borntofun · 01/08/2023 19:48

Thanks for the comments. I realised there would be legal requirements-just need to find the right person to talk to! GoodVibesHere-great points which I have considered. The toy attached is a soft gecko which changes colour in warm water. There is a ‘popper’ attached to the T shirt and another to the underside of the gecko. Gecko meant to be removed before washing. Would be a 5-9 year item. Hoppinggreen-doing the maths and thinking would try an Etsy shop?

Having an etsy shop is low upfront cost but you have quite a bit to factor in outside of the product itself (I have an etsy shop of shirts)

Branding
Packaging
Delivery
Returns
You need to learn how to optimise your etsy or you will get zero sales
Set up social media
Customer service

Plus of course etsy take a very healthy chunk!

£1k is nothing to invest, unless you're buying shite from China for peanuts, in which case you will need to ensure the t-shirts and toys are safe for children. How are you going to market it? What is your target market? Where and how are you going to sell it?

Do you have a picture of a prototype? May make giving advice easier if you can post one
