How did you manage to quit?

Tell me your secrets, NRT? Knitting? Drinking water every time you got a craving?

Allen Carr here too, I read the book and haven't smoked since, not even a puff.
I cannot understand why his 'Easy Way' is not promoted more as a tool to stop smoking.

Wow, a lot of replies! Well done to you all, it’s a hard addiction to break.

I’ve actually got Allen carrs book somewhere… will dig it out.

Getting pregnant haha. Tried for years but once I was pregnant I had to do it

AHugeTinyMistake · 01/08/2023 12:42

I tried a few times to quit and managed a few days, a few weeks, a few months and two years at one point and then started again 'just having one' 🙄tried patches, vapes, cold turkey, cutting down.

One day I just decided it was time. And that was it. Five years now. I have actually cadged a fag off a friend while I was drunk a few weeks ago and it was AWFUL and made me feel really ill. So I guess I'm definitely a non smoker now 😂

Hypnotherapy- was very skeptical but was pregnant and had failed to stop several times before

ButteryNut · 01/08/2023 14:59

So with this Allen Carr book, you continue to smoke until you’ve finished reading the whole thing?

I haven't smoked for about six weeks - so still think of myself as a smoker giving up rather than an ex-smoker.

What really helped was going on a holiday where I committed to not smoking. For some reason, being in an unfamiliar place made it easier to not smoke. It's when I'm in my normal daily routine that the urge becomes irresistible.

I managed a week of not smoking on holiday and then, once I was home, I had a week's worth of non-smoking to cling on to.

I've kept telling myself that it gets easier with every day that passes smoke-free - which is has.

Six weeks on and my skin looks much nicer, the bags under my eyes have disappeared and the colour has returned to my cheeks.

I got pregnant... 😂

Quit a few days after the positive test.

12 years later and I'm still an ex-smoker.

Made DH quit when DD was born.

Vaping over a 6 month period
went from 18mg to 12 to 9,6,3 then zero and I just stopped using it after that. Took it for nights out for about 6 months after, but that’s now over 2 years not smoked and I won’t ever try it again

Janefx40 · 01/08/2023 16:05

@ButteryNut yes you smoke while you read and at particular points he will ask you to smoke a cigarette while reading. So there's nothing to lose by giving it a go. Ideally you quit at the end of the book but you don't have to. Personally I was chomping at the bit! Good luck x

ButteryNut · 01/08/2023 16:56

Thanks @Janefx40 I’ll definitely give it a go!

I don’t want to vape. Or get pregnant. Not going on holiday any time soon. So I guess the book is a good place to start!
Ridiculous that I actually quit completely when pregnant. Then few months later thought I could have a few puffs and here I am, back to square one.

The Carr book is so utterly horrible, you give up smoking at the prospect of ever having to read it ever again. The best part of it is the page listing the pros of smoking.

Although some people can perhaps quit and then smoke and either hate it or control it, I think for a large number of smokers it is necessary to commit to never having another cigarette ever for the rest of your life. Just decide to be a non smoker and do it. Its hell for a few weeks maybe but it gets better. So many people go through that successfully and then resume for no good reason
