Norway packing advice

Spending 5 days in Bergen next month. Do I need to get Norwegian currency to take? It's self catering so am going to take some food if possible....does that sound silly? I'm only taking hand luggage.

Complete travel novice here.

Personally I wouldn’t take food. I believe you technically can’t take meat/dairy into Norway now (although they probably won’t check). Plus it’ll take up precious space in your hand luggage.

Do be prepared for crazy high food prices (and high prices generally - haven’t been to Bergen but Oslo/Trondheim are very expensive). Some currency would be helpful but tbh you can just use your card like anywhere else so I don’t usually bother these days.

Many shops are closed on a Sunday so if you do arrive on a Sunday then I’d just eat on the plane as it can be a pain trying to find open shops… have made that mistake before!

I'm going to pay extra for another suitcase and fill it with pot noodles and chocolate! It was so expensive last time. Eye watering!

I'm going to take dried pasta, biscuits and crackers. I'd rather save money on food and take less clothes.

Been to Norway twice, most places you pay by card, even for bottles of water. Be aware Norway is pricey. About £15 for a bowl of soup in a restaurant. That was a month prior pandemic. It’s an amazing place, enjoy.

I am also off to Bergen for 5 days end of September. I suspect it will rain but I have no idea what I should wear or pack.
Watching this thread with interest.

Well first, check your baggage allowance. Norwegian only give you an underseat bag for free.
I spent a week in Bergen last autumn. It's great. I just bought food there. I was staying in a shared room in a hostel so there was a kitchen if I wanted to cook.

You can get cash out at an ATM, you don't have to order it in advance. Ideally using a card which doesn't add on extra % or charges.

I got the 96h Bergen Card and made the most of that. The tram to & from the airport is covered by that and you can get it online before you go.

It will probably rain quite a bit. A good waterproof and umbrella will be invaluable.

You can download the Norwegian dictionary to Google Translate and the offline map for the area to Google maps before you go.

Thanks for all the info.
I am hoping to pack everything I need into undersea badge and put stuff into my pocket or wear it. Booked a hotel with breakfast and evening meal included. Its a birthday present for my DH. Also staying in Flam for a few nights with food included. So looking forward to it!!

We went skiing in Norway a couple of years ago and followed that with a few days in Oslo. We never had any Norwegian money, everything was done by card.

Mindymomo · 01/08/2023 08:51

We’ve been to Bergen twice on a cruise, lucky you going for 5 days. They take cards everywhere even at the big outdoor market. We found some out of the way, main tourist routes a bit cheaper and things like cakes and waffles are quite big, so can be shared.

Norway is great but food is really expensive. You can’t take any meat or dairy products through customs but I would take stuff like shop bought wrapped flapjacks and protein bars. Food that is calorie dense but takes up a small amount of space.

I remember seeing fish and chips at £25 per head takeaway and that was pre pandemic.

BrightSideRightSide · 01/08/2023 10:14

Try not to worry too much about food prices. Yes it’s expensive but the Krone is super low just now so your GBP goes much further. It doesn’t make it cheap but certainly better than it has been in the past. If you drink alcohol, buy beer from the supermarket, pick up spirits in duty free and wine you can get in the Vinmonopol shops (just be wary of their opening times which are quite short and no Sunday opening). Have a great time and just prepare yourself for all seasons in one day!

I've paid £10 for an overhead baggage. I figured it was definitely worth it. Any advice on lightweight food to take?
