Suggestion for music listening device

I'm looking for a gift for my 12yo DS birthday. He won't be getting a phone until he's 13 but I'd like to give him some device that is only for listening to music. We have a family premium subscription for Spotify and I'd love to get him something like an iPod Nano from the olden days - just a portable device to listen to music on. Do these things exist anymore? Or do people only listen to music on their phone?

The idea is to give him something to listen to music on, like a Walkman, but not be able to download other apps or internet.

I thought something might exist for running etc. but not sure.

To clarify- he's 11, turning 12 next month.

Look into MP3 players, yes they are still a thing

I'm looking for one for mine that can play Spotify isn't a phone so following with interest. Sony still do a walkman but it's a bit pricey!

Sony NW-E394 Walkman

Doesn’t do Spotify so doesn’t do what the OP asked for

It was an example of the sort of thing, where’s your contribution 🙄

Thanks for the replies. I've been Googling and I'm looking at Mighty Vibe online now - never heard of it before so not sure if it's any good.

How about an old smartphone without a SIM card? We did this for the year before DD got her first phone and it worked well.

I didn't think about that! Thanks!

They can still connect it to the WiFi (which they will need to do to use Spotify!) and download apps on it.

Even my old IPod Touch had everything like Facebook and WhatsApp on it.

would you consider an ipod, so no sim, but basically all other smartphone options when wifi available

You can put controls on it. DD is older and still requires our ok to download apps. She had a fully functioning iphone at 11 but still no WhatsApp (was allowed at 12), Insta (13, with huge restrictions and checks by us) and TikTok (when she was 15 1/2).

If you only use it with wifi it works just as a tablet, I honestly don't see the huge issue. Talk to your child about what is allowed and set boundaries. Better to teach them than forbid everything.

WhatsApp is easier than texting for groups and DD had various ones for secondary school and two hobbies.
