Who organises for home decorating/improvement? Me? DH?

I want to get some decorating done and now I'm on the 6 weeks hols I thought I'd get some done. DH tells me not to waste time/money and just get professionals in. DH refuses to decorate anymore (I did our DCs bedroom prior).

Thing is I'm not allowed to use my phone at work so find it hard to organise decorators etc to get quotes. DH doesn't want to do it, wants to leave it with me. Our neighbour can recommend a decorator but they are booked up in advance so unlikely to be available over the holidays. So I'm still thinking of just getting it done myself. I can't bear looking at the crappy old wall paper we still have!

Neighbour also said decorator needs the room cleared (but we have nowhere to put sofas etc) and we also have a dog that is very hyper! So I'm still thinking of doing it myself. But I know he won't be happy...

Any DIY/decorating tips? Am I better off trying to get it sorted for Oct half term instead?

You don't need to be in the house while the decorator is working - we deliberately got our hallway done while we were travelling for work so avoided all the disruption. Why not just use the holidays to get people round to quote, and then book them in for when you're back at work? Though obvs you'd have to make some sort of arrangement for the dog.

Not everyone can clear the whole room, so although it's better with the room empty, you can probably just move everything to the middle and cover it.

There are decorators that will move your furniture to other rooms or place it strategically in the room and cover it as they work. You pay for this level of service, but I find it well worth the cost. If I had the kind of body that could easily move furniture, I would still have the kind of young body that didn’t now ache and scream when I try to strip wallpaper or paint.

we had several rooms painted recently and they managed our furniture just fine. Whole job with careful trim work, 2 coats, multiple rooms, heavy furniture to puzzle about, all done in a day. I can’t imagine how many weekends we would have sacrificed. Big, skilled work crews are worth it.

Most decorators where I live are booked up 3 months in advance, so I think you'd be lucky to get someone. You can call or message them outside of work hours and ask them to come and quote in the evening.

As per the first reply.
I've rarely had a room completely empty - other than if I am having a new carpet. You would normally leave the "big" furniture in the middle and they cover it with a dust sheet. I mean, life is easier if you could but it certainly isn't essential.

If you are happy to do it yourself though - crack on. If he doesn't want to get involved, then he doesn't get to criticise either. I've done both over the years - DIY and 'getting someone in'. I know which I prefer, but I also know which costs more.
