Anyone got their washer/dryer upstairs?

I've got a small room on 2nd floor I could put them in as my kitchen space is limited.

The room is next to bathroom so can use water supply from there.

I know it's possible because people on 2nd floor flats have washing machines 😂

But just wondering if anyone's done this and if there's any tips for sound proofing or anything.

My sister was considering this. She would have put the washing machine in a shower tray to avoid leaks damaging the floor/ ceiling.
She’s decided not to as her plumber advised that he had tried this but his wife got fed up with going up and down stairs to deal with each load.
If it’s a trade-off for space in your kitchen then that might be a small price to pay.

We have our washer and dryer (nick named the wetter and the dryer by our youngest!) In our upstairs bathroom. It's great, especially with young kids as I used to sort washing piles while they were in the bath and I could keep an eye on them. Realistically, we only take washing outside a few months of the year so it's reduced the amount of up/down the stairs with washing loads. Would def go for this option again in the next house.

I have mine on the second floor in the bathroom. I prefer it actually! Most of the laundry gets generated upstairs anyway (sheets, bath towels, clothes), and the laundry baskets are in the bathroom.

We do have a balcony that we use for drying, so no traipsing down the stairs with wet laundry.

Yes! I love it. No more washing being trailed through the house. As you say people in flats have washing machines so can't see what the big deal is. But lots of people are horrified!

Mine are upstairs in an old airing cupboard next to the bathroom. I have a worktop and the washing machine is under the counter next to a small base unit, with the dryer on top of the counter.

It’s not noisy, although DH put the washing machine on a paving slab to make sure it was level! I don’t have an issue with going up and down for each load - our laundry baskets are upstairs so everything goes straight into the machine. If I’m line-drying, I would have had to take the laundry downstairs to the washing machine anyway, so it doesn’t make any difference.

Loads of homes state side have this set up.
It's quite usual. No one seems to dry clothes outside, so why bother carting dirty clothes downstairs to wash then take them back upstairs to put away

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 30/07/2023 22:19

I have this. It’s no issue at all. All clothes can be dumped in there.

If they need hanging outside l just take them down and hang them out. It’s no big deal, I’d have to take them downstairs at some point if the washer was in the kitchen.

I have this set up, I absolutely love it. Only have to carry clothes up and down the stairs when the sun is out and I can put them on the line (obviously not that often being England). I have a long wardrobe pole across the top of the room which I can hang things on hangers too. Would recommend to anyone. My washing machine sits in a tray, just in case of leaks, and I got some cushioned pads for it to sit on to absorb vibration. I also have an inflatable pillow that sits between the washing machine and the worktop above which again helps it stay still. I also laid carpet in that room instead of tile (at my builders recommendation) as it makes it quieter - I can barely hear it when I'm downstairs

practicepracticepractice · 30/07/2023 22:34

I'd love to have this set up upstairs

PrinceHaz · 30/07/2023 22:40

In our bathroom in the airing cupboard. It’s good because nothing needs to come up and down stairs. Bad side is it’s on a shelf in the airing cupboard so if I needed it serviced, I’d need 2 people to get it down.

HarrietStyles · 30/07/2023 22:42

If I ever built a house I would have the utility room upstairs. It makes so much more sense to me. Why do we carry baskets of dirty laundry downstairs to wash, then carry them all back upstairs again? Go for it.

Gilead · 30/07/2023 22:45

Both upstairs in an old airing cupboard. Most washing is upstairs anyway, and as I’m disabled I can’t line dry anyway.
As for noise you can buy silencer mats from argos, a rubber mat designed to muffle noise.

lochanmor · 30/07/2023 22:45

It makes so much more sense to have them near the bedrooms/in a bathroom when you really think about it. The UK is pretty unusual in normalising washing machines in kitchens. Ideally I would love a utility room, but if not would definitely prefer bathroom over kitchen.

scrivette · 30/07/2023 22:48

When we have our extension we are planning on having our washing machine upstairs. Carrying the washing downstairs to dry it is the same as carrying the washing downstairs to put it in the machine so can't see that will be an issue.

Rookie93 · 30/07/2023 23:02

Not the UK but have our washer and the dryer in a cupboard on 1st floor near the bedrooms. As pp it's convenient as all the washing is invariably upstairs to begin with. Occasionally bring stuff down to the garden to dry outside if it's sunny but normally use the dryer. Have quite a bit of sound insulation built in though so not a lot of noise or vibration.

Thanks so much everyone for the positive responses. Have booked a plumber to do this!
