this has only started in the last few weeks.

on Instagram, I comment on a photo/reel. Then some random man (I assume) will comment underneath with some comment about my weight. Telling me I’m obese / need to get to the gym, or I’m fat and lazy.

I’m fat. A size 18. Not ideal; but frankly none of their business.

why the fuck have these men got the audacity to comment on my weight?

It's about entitlement. Patriarchal, capitalist western society has centered and empowered a particular group above all others, and as such many people have noticed that many members of that group - (middle class) white men - exhibit the highest levels of entitlement, despite their actual mediocrity.

When the likes of the kardashians and Britney Spears get called fat and ugly on a daily basis then it’s obvious the issue isn’t with you, it’s them.

These comments should just be deleted straight away because every single photo I look on has these sorts of vile comments.

I have had white van man shout out fatty to me when out exercising. I am not fat, but they say it because they think it will crush me.

I've had to change my profile pic to something neutral because the abuse was getting so out of hand.

It's like they're just waiting for any woman to comment so they can either call them a slut/whore (if they find them attractive) or fat/ugly (if they don't).

I get nasty comments from (mostly) men on social media (FB & Insta) whenever I say something they don’t like or feel attacked by. My comments are never personal or nasty, more social/feminist commentary etc. Some blokes cannot handle it, so they say something about my appearance etc. it’s laughable because their accounts are typically faceless and my profile pic is gorgeous as it happens. Some people set up accounts just for the opportunity to troll others, sad little fuckers. It infuriates them that women have a voice.

I believe you OP, some of the comments I see to women on instagram are horrible. I’ve not noticed similar comments towards men but I haven’t gone searching for them either.
