Someone please explain to me the benefit of nappy pants?

I mean the fully absorbent taped-nappy alternative, nothing to do with potty training.

I have just changed 1.5yo DD’s taped nappy while she was standing watching tv - pj bottoms down to knees, whip nappy off, quick wipe, put new nappy on. Took about 10 seconds.

In a nappy pant situation I’d have to lie her down, take trousers off, wriggle new nappy on and up, pull up trousers. On a day out I’d have to take her shoes off, to get her trousers off, to get her new nappy on??

Also nappy pants aren’t adjustable at the waist so surely that’s a con?

I have 3 kids and have never understood what I’m missing with the nappy pant love, and I feel dumb 😂

Well don’t necessarily have to lie an older child down, but the trouser and shoe issue still stands surely?

I think they have their advantages for wriggly babies, especially overnight as the stretchy waistband means they can move with baby, expand as they sleep and not dig in. Around 10 months when mine were at the peak throw themselves around the cot at night age we found taped nappies sometimes leaked but never the nappy pants. I agree with you though on changing toddlers in shoes, massive PITA.

MariaVT65 · 30/07/2023 07:26

As my child got to about 2 and a half, he has become more difficult to change lying down. I actually find it easier to change nappy pants while he is standing up, like you’d put normal pants on!

Main advantage for me was that they didn't leak as much. And I never figured out how to change a tape nappy with my child standing up because he used to try to escape, I needed him lying down for better control.

It is annoying having to take everything off though, agreed.

PretendUsername · 30/07/2023 07:27

Kids come in different sizes. Some outgrow the taped ones quicker than others so some parents don't have a choice but to transition. I find it quite easy to rip the sides in order to get them off the same way a tabbed one would come off. The sides are very stretchy elastic so that covers the adjustment issue you raise, they sort of stretch to fit.

WhisperingHi · 30/07/2023 07:29

Never used them with my elder, more relaxed and compliant child.

But my youngest had a habit from around 18 months of sitting in his cot in the morning and taking his nappy off, even when he had a vest on. The pants stop him being able to do that. He also doesn't lie or stand particularly still, so it's easier to hook legs in than try to get the tabs even.

BertieBotts · 30/07/2023 07:30

We don't put shoes on in the house so don't need to worry about that.

My kids all went through a phase from about 9m where they didn't want to lie down so standing changes were easiest.

I always took trousers totally off anyway if we were at home, just for easier access.

With the nappy pant ones you can rip the sides to get them off if you need to and then I'd replace with a normal tape nappy if out.

They are also good for older kids that still need a nappy at night as they can do it themselves.

mynameiscalypso · 30/07/2023 07:33

I used to hate putting on normal nappies while DS was standing up. They always ended up lopsided or not tight enough. I did use them if we were out sometimes but, generally, found the pull ups much easier to use and much less prone to leaking.

yes I have used them, I am aware they rip to get off. It’s getting them on I’m confused about 😄

but makes a lot of sense re nighttime comfort!

We use them for our 4yr old at night. He just steps into them after he's done his last wee on the toilet. Could use a nappy but it for me hon stepping in to the nappy pant is faster.

For younger ones we have used a nappy pant when our littlest was a wriggler. DH would pick him up and I'd pull on the pants.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 30/07/2023 07:38

And yeh the stretchiness is good. Size 5 fits ds4 and DS20m!

Lindy2 · 30/07/2023 07:39

I used to be a childminder. Pull ups on a child were always a bit of a pain. The change takes much longer with having to remove shoes and trousers completely. They never seem to work as well as a nappy either.

PerspiringElizabeth · 30/07/2023 07:40

Wow 2 parents needed for a nappy change @Hungrycaterpillarsmummy !! Doesn’t sound convenient 😄 but it is a trivial issue of course, who cares in the grand scheme. Whatever works!

@TropicalTrama thanks makes a lot of sense, thanks! The night time element is what I wasn’t thinking of!

Case closed 😄

I never used them, my kids weren’t wrigglers and they were so much more expensive than normal nappies! Also when they are potty training, they feel like nappies so they’d have wee’d in them. Straight to underwear.

Yea2023 · 30/07/2023 07:42

My DC used to love rolling, crawling then running off mid nappy change - it was full on wrestling, would never lie still for tabs legs doing windmills etc. Was endearing + infuriating!

We used nappypants as soon as they grew into them as changes were a nightmare and speed (no tabs) was needed.

I always found them not as absorbent though.

Cindan · 30/07/2023 07:45

Started using them when DD discovered she could pull the tapes off the other kind and was running around with poo going everywhere. She didn’t know how to get a pull up off.

I kept using them because I felt the soft elastic was more comfortable for her than the tapes.

PerspiringElizabeth · 30/07/2023 07:45

@Yea2023 did they not wriggle/run away during standing changes? My eldest was like that (still is!) - my feet under his armpits! 😄 was in cloth nappies though and I don’t think the pants were around then anyway.

There's been so many times it's needed two of us.
Even mum and dad when they have him
He's a tank and he's fast!

BertieBotts · 30/07/2023 08:01

Why are people changing so many nappies with shoes? I hardly ever do that.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 30/07/2023 08:07

I don't do that either.

UndercoverCop · 30/07/2023 08:12

DS was and is actually, long thin and never stops moving, a whole variety of nappies leaked. Nappy pants didn't.
Also I never changed him standing up/in the living room etc. He was always changed at the changing table. I used to hate it when SIL came round and changed DN on my sofa.
He was toilet trained before 2.5 so I have no idea if they work for older children/larger bladders.

gogomoto · 30/07/2023 08:17

I used them (reusable ones) from 2.5 when I, ahem, thought I would potty train dd1, let's say it didn't go to plan, she took 2 years, she's autistic. Prior I used standard reusables

RecklessBlackberries · 30/07/2023 08:19

From about 10 months onwards, my baby wouldn't lie still enough for taped nappies. They ended up taped wrong and leaking. He mainly wore dungarees with poppers in the crotch/legs so no difficulty getting the nappy pants on and off.

When they're wearing trousers and shoes, they are more annoying. But I still find it easier than expecting him to stay still enough to tape nappies properly.

Heartbreaktuna · 30/07/2023 08:27

I wish they were available from birth! Switched as soon as DS could fit into nappy pants. I found the taped ones were always either too tight, leaving marks, or too loose. Nursery make us send taped ones and D's always comes back with marks. He's always comfy in nappy pants because of the soft wide elastic waist.

it started before standing.

I’ve always been supermarket nappies, but I rem DH and I watching a Oampers ‘we do size 3 nappypants’ ad and both saying we’ll get those.

DC was very bad - it was a game to scissor legs roll etc. I never managed to change standing or on my lap but it would have been a chase job anyway, it already was.

I’m currently preg and will happily use tabs - the pants were ease due to that DC.
